Okay so I just bought my first Datsun, it's an 81 280zx 5 speed and the guy I bought it from had apparently gotten drunk one night and lost the gas cap.
So my question is, is there any aftermarket gas caps that will fit on the car until I have enough money to get the original locking gas cap? Because everywhere I've looked the originals are $40 at the cheapest.
And I already tried autozone and o'reillys and whatnot and the one they say should fit does not.

Thanks for the help but the only gas cap that would fit my car on those websites was the original locking gas cap for 40 dollars that I don't have at the moment.
Looks like I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow

 

I have a spare, but it doesn't have a key =(

I had to have a plastic bag over my gas cap for a while, before I bought my locking cap from MSA

It is well worth it. I suggest the invest.

 

Yeah I want the locking gas cap but my check is going to insurance (which is extremely high because I'm only 20), rent, and cell phone bill.
So I'll probably end up covering it with something for two weeks until I get paid

Find a local junk yard w/ a 280zx... grab the gas cap. Shouldn't charge ya more than $5. If you are lucky, they might even have the keys to the car still in the ignition...

 

how high is your insurancE? I never paid more than 600 bucks for an entire year with all my datsuns and I've owned them since I was 18 and am 23 now. **** my S2000 fully covered is only 800 for the year.

 

Well if you do get a new gas cap, make sure you get it with the key facing the same way as your car keys, because the Z's had two different keys, right and left, its hard to explain the difference, but there is and if you can get the key to match the design of your cars key (for example if you have a left key your gonna wanna find a left key gas cap) then im not sure but i think you can get the gas cap re-keyed to accept your car key, and then you wouldn't have to carry around two car keys to fumble around with figuring out which one is which
