I got my '83 to start!!

I am so close, but I actually got to hear it run for a few seconds!! And it was on fuel, not anything else. So I am taking a little break, and then going out there, and check the plugs, and see how they are. I am pretty sure tomorrow, or this week. My '83 will be running on his own power for more than a few seconds. And then some, he he

hmmm why only a few seconds? incase it comes gown to it im just gonna say it now. if you cant get the car to run for more than a few seconds be sure you got the right AFM. there are 2 dif styles i believe and with the wrong one it will run for a few seconds and die everytime... just a heads up if your suddenly have a huge problem like that.. but for now... AWSOME.... time to shoot for continuous running haha.

Yeah the fuel pump is working fine, after I swapped it for another one. Funny thing is the one that works came off my '82. I am thinking the AFM is shot, Will investigate some more, and let you know. And thanks for the comments so far.

Did it start up, kinda run for a moment then die? If so, did you try turning it over again? My Z was doing this but would run after turning it over again when the O2 sensor was dead.

Well I put my NGK's I had on my '82. They were still decent, and I when I pulled the plugs out of the '83. They were fouled, so I am thinking the AFM, and possibly the throttle body is gummed up also. I will wait until tomorrow, and get some starter fluid for it. And I thought about using my good AFM, but I am afraid, because if I screw it up. I am screwed, and will have no vehicle to drive. I tried the AFM's I had lying around, but they all were the same result. It would run then die, and not restart. I also hear a clacking sort of sound when it it running. It is a horrible sound, and worries me. Any thoughts? I don't think it is inside the engine, maybe something is loose? What do you all think?

Wild. I had this problem with my car. The Main reason my car would not run over the year i tried to make it. was the Oil Pump/Dizzy shaft. it was off one notch. It would start. spudder and then die.

Well I took the risk the other day, and used my good AFM. At first, it started right up, ran for a few seconds, then died. When I tried to restart it, it would actually try to catch, but wouldn't start. Anyway I have decided to get a bucket of carb cleaner, with the basket in it. And soak the bottom of the fuel injectors, cold start valve, and whatever else has fuel running through it. I even thought about soaking the EGR valve, because I am sure it is plugged up. That way doing all that, I save myself some grief. And eliminate more problems, that would later develope.

I want to get this Z running badly. But I want to take my time, and do it where it will run like a top. And try not to hurry, which I really haven't been. Which is a good thing, anyway will keep you all posted.

while you have the rail off, blow it out, or soak it if ya can. change the fuel filter yet? you prolly already did all the tune up stuff. and i cant stress enough aboot fresh gas, even if it is a pain to get out.

Yeah I thought about using the JSK rail, when I put everything back together. As for the fuel filter, pretty much new and I checked it already. The fuel in the tank is not that old. I put it in not too long ago, after swapping the fuel tanks.(roughly 4 months ago, and only 5 gallons) I am also getting some Techron fuel system cleaner, after putting some more fuel in the tank. That stuff is amazing! I haven't really replaced all the tune-up parts. But they looked decent, and I did swap out the plugs, for some better ones. Just temporary, until I get it runnning, then I will buy all new tune-up parts. The fuel pressure regulator, I was thinking about also. Thanks guys for all the suggestions, will let you know more, as I progress.
