Why not make sure all the head bolts are TQed down right first?

its just a guess, but normally when a HG goes for no apparent reason it tends to be a warped head

you think maybe that huge backfire i had helped screw it too? yeah i might as well make sure they're all torqued down, wouldn't that + gasket take care of any 1/1000th inch of warp?

any head i buy i take to the machine shop. usually check it out for free. probably warped before you put it on. a backfire wont really warp a head. over heating does or usinge the wrong torque pattern or letting it sit to long on a non flat surface or not unbolting it in the right pattern or valves hitting pistons can do it.

Help diagnose what went wrong

So as you know I had my engine running until it patrick swayzed and got oil in the water, which is a mystery. Its all torn down now and this is what I'm looking at.

The head has passages where water COULD be flowing but the block doesn't even have passages for it to go! Nevermind the fact that the gasket blocks it off...

So what else could have gone wrong? The pistons are looking clean though and so is everything else. What else should I be looking for

Did it overheat? (I can't remember... and you started a new thread instead of continuing your other).

The ports on the headgasket depend on which head / block combination you order it for. I've done more than a handful of L28 head jobs and found that some are made diff than others. Hell, my MLS headgasket from MSA didn't have the right ports, so I drilled them out after another head job. I haven't raced it since then to see how hot it will get under a heavy load, but running on the freeway in 100*+ is cooler than it used to be.

See my thread on that: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...+gasket&page=2

Why is this in OT?

Anyways You can get oil in your water though the timing chain cover gasket. not just the head

What brand headgasket are you using? In my experience, the Fel-Pro gaskets do not match perfectly with the L series motors, and I kept getting oil and water mix. I eventually went and sourced a Beck/Arnley gasket from Napa, and I haven't had that problem since.

blown head gasket

I stand by fel pro gaskets been using them since 1985 and have many Z-friends and techs who swear by fel-pro gaskets. In my opinion the cyl-head is the problem until you do a professional pressure test and also for warpage....o/k.
