CV Axles

Today I lifted my 83 2+2 in the rear to unbolt drive shaft. found yout the CV Axles are compleatly diff then the other ones from my 83 Part's car. The 83 2+2 has 6 bolts mounting to the wheel assembaly. and bolts the the rear end compleatly diff. Has two rubber boots on it. Instead of the ones from my part's car. that only have One boot. and only 4 bolts to mount. AnyOne know why they are so diff? and Just how will i be able to swap out the 3:54 for my 3:90?

The 79-81's had half shafts which are 4 bolt flanges, and the 81 turbo / 82-83's had the cv shafts w/ 6 bolts. They should look like this:

CV Shaft:

Half Shaft:

I don't know why your 83 parts car would have half shafts unless someone swapped them. Anyway, they have the same differential splines, but have different hub flanges @ the rotor.... you would have to pull the hubs & swap them too.

the late model 2+2 had the 6 bolt flange for the half shaft so your parts car must be an 83 na. Is it a cv half shaft or the u joint style. my 83 na has u joints. hard to tell from your descriptiion but I don't believe you have cv half shafts on your parts car. From some of the posts here I believe you can mix and match but have to take the diffy apart. Or if you have two R200 diffys I believe you can change out the guts without changing half shafts. But when I changed a 5 speed into an 81zxt I pulled a diffy out of an 81 2+2 which was an R180 with cv joints half shafts. There doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rule about which diffy went where.

You don't need to do anything w/ the diff... just the hubs.

Nismo has the right pic's. the top two pic's are on my 2+2. and the bottom pic shows the Axles off my 83 part's. and yes my part's car was a 5 speed 2 seater NA. The part's car is gone. But i did drop the entire rear end. Crossmember, shocks, rear end, wheel's. just unbotls it, and let it drop compleat. So the hub's i can just ****** from that. Thansk guy's, more work, but from what i here, the 3:90 should be worth it.

I hate changing those rear hubs... somewhat of a PITA. It might be easier to just swap the entire cross members.

Good luck replacing the boots. Thats all I've got to say. i dont remember if its the outer or the inner boots, but changing 'em is damn near impossible. I know, I've tried. The other end is a peice of cake though.

And it's time to do it all over again. Question. 87 rear end swap? or leave the R180 there with the 5 luge swap?
