Advice for a first-time 280ZX buyer?

My car recently got stolen, and I need a replacement, and I've always wanted a 280ZX, so I figured I'd take the opportunity to get one as my daily driver. I don't drive that much (maybe 3000 miles a year, if that) and don't really need anything in a car other than a back seat (even if its really cramped).

Anyway, I found one near me with relatively low miles, and seems to be fine except for needing a paintjob. Is there anything specifically I should look for in terms of future costly repairs or something? Or anything in general?

It's a 1982 2+2 automatic model without the turbo.

For me, rust is the big one. Rust creeps around all over the 280zx's I've seen. Around the windshield, floor pans, fenders (especially the spot you can only see when you have the door open), bottom of the tail lights, around the gas cap, and on the roof.

The headliner seems to also come off easily, so you could see if a rough DIY was done or not.

Also I would check the tires to see if there is an alignment issue anywhere. Since it's not adjustable you could be looking at new suspension parts which prices will easily stack up high.

Also check for rust in the spare tire well and inside the front wheel wells near the front bumber mounts. I would also look at the frame rails as these are prone to getting beat up over speed bumps.

Compression test on the motor. If you have problems it will require at least a partial tear down to deal with it. You can buy a tester for under $30 and it is easy to use.
