Yes, bringing the timing back for some reason cleans up smog a bit.
I think for your car 8-10 is good but for emissions checking go on the conservative side. 7-8 BTDC is great.

For driving you may find that moving it back up to 12 before gives you a bit more torque once you have passed smog.

you can also try SeaFoming it stuff works amazingly just pull a vac line that sucks (make sure its not the one to your brake booster) shove the hose in the can and rev the car. if the car dies its not a problem pull the hose out of the can start back up and rev higher lol hope this helps

HC means it's either running too rich, or the cat isn't working.

Was the car at running temp for the test? Does the car have a cat? Is the motor stock?

And read this in its entirety: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=failed

The engine is stock as far as I'm aware I was driving it around all day so defiantly at operating temp And it does indeed have a cat

Do u think I should try unplugging one of the injectors?

If your # 6 cylinder has good compression. Unplug # 5 with your new cat set your timing to 5 degress, and unplug your cold start valve. Also make sure your oil and filter is fresh, and your car is freshly tuned up. Good luck man. I feel for you.

You can also try getting a new O2 sensor (really simple install). It did wonders for my smog numbers and I picked up a Bosch one at Pep Boys for $35 bucks-ish.
