dude, was there oil in it? whats the condition? you need to explain the situation alot more than u found a project stuck a battery in it started it it smoked now wont start... you need to tell use the cars condition and status and history as far as your know of prior to purchasing it, what you did other than adding a battery where it smoked from what it smelled like etc...

sorry about that was a little tired when i typed that... when i got the car he said all it needed was a battery, it does have oil in it still but its leaking pretty bad. it looks like it could just be a head gasket leak but im not positive. it still has the original engine in it with 170,xxx miles on it... from what i remember it smelt just like burning oil.. that's the only visible problem that i can see, you can see the stain on the engine block itself. but then the battery wont keep its charge either but that's just the alternator.. so i guess what would you suggest as far as getting the leaking and smoking to stop.
thanks again

do a compression check, but sounds like you might also have to check for a short or something causing the battery to drain, unless your sure its just a bad alternator. this is a tough situation cause you dont want to cause any more damage to the engine and your not sure exactly what happened.
