turbo vs na transmissions
not sure .IF U DONT HAVE ONE ALREADY U SHOULD DEFINATLY GO TO AUTOZONE OR WHERE EVER AND GET YOURSELF A HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL .IT WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION HERE .AND HELP IN THE FUTURE.AT LEAST W/ THE HOWTOS
thanks, and yeah your right i need a manual, but i just recently bought my z this week, it runs well besides the throwout bearing, not bad considering it came with another body which is rust free and has a turbo motor and all the electronics, including digital dash. All for the low low price of $262
the turbo car has an automatic transmission, but origianally had a manual and all the stuff like clutch pedal and stuff are still there so the auto will come out and the manual will take its place, yeah it doesnt have a title but that will be taken care of, and yeah i prefer the analog, so ill prolly just sell the digital dash cuz their rare and i know someone wants it.
Those old Nissan automatics are not that good. The internals suck power and the gearing is less than ideal plus they top out in 3rd gear at 1:1 ratio. Think about driving your 5-speed around all day in 4th gear.
Late model cars however seem to have appropriate gearing and much better shift points in their automatics. (I compared the Altima auto and 5-speed. I got the auto)
for anyone who likes an auto but wants more power, get the 1983-84 Nissan maxima 4-speed auto. its 4th gear overdrive is a taller gear than even the non-turbo 81-83 280ZX! (which is the tallest 5th gear avail for a Z) Put a 3.9 or 4.11 rear in there and you'll still be under 3,000 rpm at 70mph while in overdrive.
One guy on this forum put the 4-speed Maxima auto in his 280ZX turbo and I think he runs a 3.9 rear.
"for those that don't know, the Maxima up to 1984 has the L24 so the 4-speed in that car is for an L-series engine"

the turbo and n/a trannies are the same. the trannies changed with the years not the models. The rear end is a diff. story tho. The turbos had a higher geared rear end for a higher top end, cause they had the power. N/a s had a lower rear end to boost power..
there is a diffrence with the n/a and turbo tranny the turbo ZXs used a t5 W/warner..a lot heavier then the n/a tranny but a lot more durable.. also it uses a larger fly wheel and it has a diffrent throwout bearing carrier... IMO id get the t5 B/W tranny if your going to put a 5 speed in your turbo ZX... you can pound on it a lot harder then you can with the n/a 5 speed
Where did you hear that the T5 is heavier? I have one and it is aluminum! That thing is so light weight. I don't have a Z 5-speed out, but I do have an old 4-speed and the 4-speed weighs a lot more than the Borg Warner T5.I've also heard people say the n/a tranny is stronger than the T5 but I'd guess they're not totally right. The n/a tranny is strong enough for most turbo L28 applications.
i know from experiance that the t5 is heavier... ive replaced clutches for both n/a and turbo cars and yeah the t5 was a lot heaver to work with... the n/a tranny was a lot easier for me to lift in place while the t5 really beat me up..
doh forgot bout the t5...
the bw didnt come on all the turbos tho did it? thought it was 83, but im still learnin..
i haven't felt the t5 but the standard tranny is pretty light, doesn't it have an aluminum case? i put in a r200, i think the diff. weighed more than the tranny, but maybe it was just the size that threw me off, whew..

The T5 is a sturdier tranny and it has slighty different 1st and 2nd gears (if i remember right). If I was doing the swap I would go with the T5, mostly because there are several readily availably upgrades for them.
