I was following my friend in his Prelude the other night. He said he was going a little over 140 mph. My car was over 5000 rpm in 5th gear and he was slowly pulling away from me. I figure I was doing about 138 mph. Not bad considering that theorectically I could keep accelerating until I reached 6500rpm.

My car is an '83 modified N/A 2+2. I also had the T-tops off but I think I had the windows up, I can't remember.

Thats nothing. A Gtech is somewhere in that range anyways, and the Garmin unit sounds better to me for not much more $$$. I'm gonna have to check that out. Does it come with the sensor or do you have to buy it seperate?

No, the garmin comes with the maps for your computer, plus all the add ons like stores, gas stations, restaurants,, etc... with the phone numbers. The GPS sensor just plugs into a usb port and runs off the computer power, and the cord is about 6' long so you can put on your dash, or wherever you want. You can also plan a trip and put in your fuel mileage, and it will tell you when and where you need to stop for fuel. A totally awesome package.
Ive also used mine for plotting out land, and it will tell you acreage.
The only problem, using the laptop is kinda bulky on the motorcycle, but works great in cars.

Now thats the S#!t !! I'm getting one of those. I drive cross country quite a bit(not usually in my Z though) so that will help me out a lot. I won't have to pay so much attention to maps and stuff like that. And for only $130. That's alot of features for only $130.

120 passing 3 tractor-trailers on Hwy 83 north through Nebraska on my way home from Co. Keep in mind this was in my 1981 280zx non turbo, which only has a 4speed transmission. The gears in the tranny are the same as the 5speed, except I don't have 5th. I hit that speed at about 5500rpm's+. The car was still pulling, but like I said earlier, I wasn't trying to break any records. Just trying to pass a few trucks before another car comes flying over the hill. RPM's may not be exact, but pretty close none the less.

Oh, and the speed was verified by my brother in his mustang as he followed in pursuit and called my cell phone while passing and said "dude, we're doing 120!" My speedo is the 130 unit, but is severly in need of calibration, or more likely just a different speedo gear. It says I'm doing 95 when I'm actually only going 70mph.

The other day me and an 180-pound passenger figured we were going about 120 at about 5400rpm (using the odometer and figuring how many miles we can go in one minute) so since I can safely go all the way to 6250rpm, I figured I top out with only me in the car at around 130-140mph . But I will have to see when I get my 130mph speedometer.

Yes, you have the wrong speedo gear. I would bet you have a gear for the 3.545 diff and you actually have a 3.90 diff.

What do you think? And ask me how I know this...

This was originally from Canada and came as a 210 kph speedo.

A little blackout and re-calibration and it's now a 210 mph speedo!

Anyone know which speedo gear I need then. And how do I verify what ratio I'm running out back. Do I have to scrape all the sludge off my diff in hopes of finding a number or can someone tell me based on my VIN?

It's 136mph where the limiter kicks in.

You can change base timing on a 1981 280zx turbo by using the screw on the crank trigger which is made for adjusting timing.

Actually the 280zx's didn't have a speed limiter. nor rev limiter for that matter....

My NA 2+2 eurosec does 245 kmh on a gps ( eurospec, but with 11:7.1 compression, fully worked head)

Stock Turbo ( eurospec 2+2) does 268 KMH ( they have a standard 3.3 gearing and .85 AR exhaust housing etc.

BTW euro speedos go through 240 KMh and turbos to 260 no miles stated so a clean look !

I have a vid somewhere on one of my tapes of my Canada Z's speedo on the freeway. Looks a lot diff than the US version... kinda looks like ya goin a lot faster than ya really are.

Sometimes I switch my parent's 03 Buick LaSabre gauges to metric & watch their eyes light up when they start the car... he he!

The G-Tech is not so good for measuring top speed in high speed runs. Speed through the traps on a 1/4 it can handle.

You need a GPS or a GPS based data acquisition system although a normal GPS that calculates MPH/KPH will work just as well, but you figure you'll spend about the same on just a GPS as you would a full blown GPS data acquisition system!

The Racepak G2Xtreme is only $899 at: http://www.g2xtreme.com

And was rated by the SCCA's official magazine "Sports Car" as the easiest data acquisition system to install and use...

Or you could have somebody with a 160MPH speedo in their European super car tailgate you during your topspeed run
