newbie question

I've been on the forum for a while but I am new to the Z world in that I just got my first Z last month. I've got an '82 zx n/a and an '80 zx n/a. The '82 is a daily driver, the '80 is a non-driver. Anyway, I've got sluggish excelleration and sometimes a "minor" backfire on the '82. I went to the Haynes Manual and it said to (among other things) check the EGR valve. That's where my question comes in...

The EGR valve appears to function properly according to their method of testing. However, the hose that comes out of the top (in the Haynes Manual drawing) is not there. Also, If I had the hose, I would not know where the other end goes into. Obviously it goes somewhere on the intake, but I know not where. So my question(s) is this: Where does the hose go? Also, why would anyone (ie. previous owner) circumvent this valve?

Any help would be greatly appreciated from a very inexperienced mechanic.

Thanks

There will be some hard line hose on the side of your intake, The EGR plugs in to the last one. You should have 3 total hard lines on the side. The first two go to the thremotime switch, the other the EGR.
