If that connection was still loose after tightening it may be broken internally causing an open circuit. I'd get the starter tested if the battery checks out. Since the solenoid is clicking than I doubt it's the ignition circuit. Gotta be the battery, Starter or battery cables.

He could check the starter himself, with a DVM. just see what the starter draw is when its active, and find the spec.

An unstable battery can give you problems. good luck telling that to the other guys in the shop I work at thogh. dose the battery ever smell like rotten eggs?

make sure the spade connector on the starter is plugged in. This connector goes from your ignition switch to your starter, and if it's unplugged, it will do exactly what you described.

Since you say the starter terminal is still loose after tightning it I would suggest removing the starter & take it to AutoZone (they can test the starter free). If it's bad then just replace it. You can clean the battery terminals first & check for any loose ignition wires, but I think it's your starter based on what you say.

sounds like starter solenoid to me, I havent messed with mine, but I would imagine you could go to Napa, or a good place like that and just get a solenoid, if you want to get by cheap.

no, the solenoid is clicking...that means its working, i think he's got too much resistance from a loose connection, or errossion on the cables, and not enough amperage is getting through the solenoid to activate the starter's actuator (which sends the gear out to turn the flywheel).
