83zxt backfire in intake??
83zxt backfire in intake??
my 83zxt was sitting since last year.. parked with a problem of barely being able to run or rev up..
ive replaced the connector on the chts and cleaned that sensor. seems good.
plugs are carboned up, those r clean now and runs a tad better but still can barely move itself..
im thinking mass flow air sensor or something.. the car seems like it cant breathe and is choking out.
ive got a couple 280z's a 77 and a 78, and a 75.
the 77 ran last year but needs fuel pump and is a parts car anyways..
could the airflow meter off the 77 work on the 83?
thats my big question.

the 83 was a car that originated from the northcarolina area, then went to massachusetts for the last 10 or so years, then i bought it in mass this summer.
atm the car is in a garage being worked on by someone, last i heard he cleaned the plugs, and put fresh fuel in it.. still backfiring in intake, hes thinking it could be the afm.
It was parked by the previous owner last year with whatever problem the car has, basically it just backfires like i said, and can only rev to about 2k max and barely move/drive in 1st gear.
the compression is decent, 20psi difference across the board. lowest being around 120 i think.. and before the car fell into a "sickness", the previous owner, woman driver said the car went along very well..
which in turn makes me very hopeful for a simple fix. because the rest of the car is near mint.

If the timing light indicates the engine timing is retarded, I'd start by checking the timing gear and chain. See:

backfiring in the intake maybe a bit much to say about it.. idk, to be more specific on that symptom its more of a "popping noise" rather than any sort of loud bang noise..
the previous owner has stated that the car has gave her this problem before, got it fixed by someone, somehow,.. who knows, but then the same problem quickly came back within the same week. and then the car was parked since.
im really leaning towards it being electrical related, cuz the car ran good, fell into having issues, got temp fix, then issues, then parked.
comparing a faulty 83afm to a 77 afm.. would the car possibly run any better? or is it completely non compatible/bad for it?
also anyone know of a good route to go on as far as replacing the 83afm with a quality replacement?
thankyou

its gonna be afm or dizzy related. check the timing and the inside of the cap for poor connections. as well as maybe new plug wires as they may have become separated in the boot with everyone pulling them off and on. make sure the dizzy shaft has no play in it as well. follow the pinout test in the fsm and test and check your afm. im sure you find something.
