New member, with lots of resto-questions

Hey guys, between this site and about 4 others ive been imersing myself into everything i could find about the ZX's.

However i have a few questions. Ive been trying to keep the stock look as much as possible in and out and since ive been unable to find about 90% of what i need ive been learning to fab what and when i can.

#1: Stock radio w/chrome face, digital tuner and tape deck: Ok this technically still works from time to time. The digital face will light up about 50% of the time and the radio works well. However its very sensitive. If i puss the volume button it gets horrbily distorted. Also the switch on the lower right hand side for Wide+Stereo does the same, if i touch it it will screw up the sound.

I have pulled the deck out and the wiring is pretty clean and intact, so im guessing internal malfunction. That means im going to have to take he deck apart by hand and clean the contacts. Anybody done this? Any tips? Also can is there a way to just bypass the Wide+Stereo switch?

#2: DECK SCREWS! Yep, the last owner used DECK SCREWS to attach the rubber moulding in the lower portion of the driver side door, for whatever reason. So i suppose im going to have to pull it of and inspect it, any ideas on where to find that piece for a decent price? Sub $150 or so...

#3: Yea i also have the awesome grating driveshaft and clunking on deceleration rearend. Ive scoured the junkyard in my area and out of 2000 cars they have ONE ZX, and its a 2+2 (i have a 2 seater). Is there a size-difference in the parts between the 2+2 and the 2? Or can i pull it and be good to go?

Thanks in advance!

MSA or Black Dragon might have the rubber moulding for you.

Not sure about the radio.

Sounds like you need a rear differiantial mount to fix the "clunking sound"

Welcome to ZDriver!

#1 & #2.... are you restoring the car to 100% orig? Can't think of any other reason to have the stocker stereo...

Have you looked on ebay / car-parts.com for a stock stereo deck? Might be easier that trying to repair it yourself.

#3... yes the 2seater & 2+2 drivelines are diff lengths. Try our MARKETPLACE, www.ebay.com or www.car-parts.com for good parts sourcing.

Actually, those radios aren't half bad. Wildman gots a CD changer hooked up to his, even. You can find those stereos whole on ebay almost all the time. The clunking is something ALL Zs are prone to. Differential mounts and/or mustache bar mounts "usually" take care of that to a greater degree. Molding...get ready to pay!

Welcome aboard!!

Carl

Actually i was suprised myself at the sound quality (when it works properly) and the desire for as close to 100% stock look as i can get in my decision to keep and attempt to repair the stocker. I have read about cd-changers being installed in the back bins and/or in the glove box which is a stealth option im also currently looking at so i can still play my tunes.

Also im pretty sure its a combo of the u-joint and the rear diff making noises. The rear diff will do the classic clunk ive read so much about when i let off the gas (like most peoples) But the drive shaft itself also cracks and pops at any speed constantly, so i guess i have a double whammy.

Thanks for the help guys, and for simple fun im going to head down and tear the stock radio out again and begin taking it apart just for to see if i can find something we ourselves can service inside.

Here are a couple of pics of my cd changer hooked to my stock stereo. And the pic of my remote, is older, before I customized my faceplate. It is just to show you what I did with the remote to the cd changer.

That gives me a pretty good idea of how to mount the cd-changer now.

I have the stock radio apart now, and have internal pictures if anybody is interested. I would have to say its a good 90% clean inside, suprisingly. The only grime all seems to be located on the inside of the rear electrical connections to the capacitors oddly enough...i dont see this causing my problem though.

The turn dials and also clean as are the contacts, however i have noticed the plastic wheel backing on them are slightly warped in spots, which may be my problem. How to fix something like that i have no idea...
