Shifter won't select a gear

Long time no chat guys! I took the Z out for a drive a while ago and got a bit too aggressive and broke the Z's tranny somehow. I was rowing through the gears quick, missed a shift and slammed it into 2nd, and all the sudden the shifter went mushy and it wouldn't go into any other gear or neutral. I was able to shake it around and finally pop it into a different gear and get home.

The shifter now goes into 3rd and reverse, but this is with much persuasion.

This is on my 72 240z, 4 spd F4W71-B trans.

Any ideas?

So even with the engine off it won't go into gear?

Correct, the shifter just feels sloppy and I can't feel any of the shift gates.

I also noticed that the freeze plug on the back of the trans where the shifter is inserted is missing. I suspect it popped out and may have caused the problem. Any idea where to get a replacement?

Drain the oil from the transmission and look for debris on the drain plug. If you tore it up, you'll probably see something stuck to the drain plug.
