problem

I've been trying to get my car to run well, but it just doesn't seem to be going in my favor. It has an '83 turbo motor (specs in my profile). With boost, it won't rev over 5000 and totally falls on its face, backfiring out the exhaust and surging like crazy. I've checked fuel pressure, changed plugs, plug wires. All of that stuff is good. Do you guys have any more ideas? Thanks.

Re: problem

I looked at your specs, but didn't see anything related to fuel delivery. Are you running the stock injectors and pump? If so, you might be experiencing fuel cutoff. Maybe the injectors hit static op. How's the fuel filter? Clogged? I can't think of much else since I'm no expert, but those are some suggestions you can look at. Good luck finding the problem.

Re: problem

First of all, your intercooler isn't big enough!

hehe... but really, it does sound like fuel is leaning out. How much boost are you running at 5000 rpm? You should replace the fuel filter and maybe have the injectors professionaly cleaned. (they disconnect the fuel rail and run straight cleanering through your engine) And maybe turn the boost down a little just to see if the engine runs smoother all they way up.

Re: problem

I've been thinking about this problem for a bit and think I may have come up with something. When I am running 20 psi boost and rev over 5000, it falls on its face and runs bad afterwards for a minute or two. This sounds almost like floating valves! Maybe with that much boost pressure, the boost is holding the intake valves open making it lose power, then the lifters pump up making it run bad afterwards. Anyone had this problem?? This also explains why it doesn't do it with lower boost.
