How do you figure that you need 30 more horsepower to beat the Mustang?

A 1981-83 280ZX block/head might be your easiest horsepower gain for cheap. You can probably slap your carbs right back on there and make use of the electronic ignition distributor from the 280ZX. More torque and horsepower. Then see about getting lower geared differential.

Do minor weight reduction like no passenger seat and no bumpers. Call it good.

huge headers + CAI + a straight pipe + EFI might get you half way there…

Mn47 head on a dished piston l28 short block with the 280zx dizy and tuned SU's and a aluminum flywheel.

Shaving any serious weight costs more then making more power. And I concure on a sbc swap, mine was a rocket ship with 3.73's and a mild 350
