in accident, need advice!
hey guys, I was driving home from work, and a guy in a nissan maxima rear ended my 240Z. The bumper is all crinkled, and I need to get a new one. If someone could give me a price estimate, some web sites, maybe even quotes from a body shop, I'd appreciate it. I want the bumper to be the same (but new) as the one in this pic:

yeah, I have AAA insurance, full coverage, and the guy says that he has insurance through some company called "Bristol West". This all happened last night around 10 (I had just gotten off work), so I wasn't able to call the insurance agency. My father is to call them today while I'm at work and get everything sorted. The car isn't in too bad of condition, the bumper is mangled, and the lower part of the Z where the bumper and exhaust is now needs to be repainted. We both got lucky, but he's going to be buying me a new bumper
. I'll post pics of how the car looks now, and how it looks later. I just can't wait to see the look on my friends faces when I tell them I was in an accident

Bumper Bummer!
Motorsport auto liists the three piece bumper for around $350.
You might need brackets ($52). With all the other pieces, ends rubber guards etc. it could be $600. When a 2300 lb. car gets hit by a 3800 lb. car, things you don't see bend. Have your car checked by an frame expert. A friend of mine had a minor tap on the back of his Porsche. After it was "fixed", he wore out a set of tires in 5000 miles. You have "classic car damage". Since your in California your neck hurts too right? Don't let a claims adjuster bullshit you into thinking all you need is a bumper!

I looked under the car, and I didn't see anything too bad. I could be wrong. The accident wasn't moving, the guy just stomped the gas and slammed into the back of my Z. I was going to post pics, but when I thought about doing it, it was too late, the sun had already gone down. I called my friend about a body shop, and he told me about a really good one, so after I call the insurance company on Monday, I think I'll get my car checked out. I'm afraid that the insurance company may want me to get a salvage title on my car, and I understand that lowers the value of the car, and I really don't want that. Thanks for your help. I will post pics tomorrow after work. Thanks again!
A salvage title is when a car is totaled by the insurance company, and sold for salvage, something you want to avoid. The sole purpose of a claims adjusters is to save the insurance company money, not to help you! Play hardball with them to get your car properly repaired. You can get an appraisal of what it is worth on line or from an independent if you need to. Don't be afraid to tell them your back hurts but all you want is to get you car fixed. You can expect to be lied to.

If you dont plat hard with them you might as well bring vasiline. I had a Prelude wrecked in 1986 The insurance wanted to total it. I went and got an appraisal. The Car was worth 3700 and the repairs where about 2800.So after that i won and the car was repaired.
If the insurance had thier way they where going to give me 1200 for the car. Real big difference. Make sure you find an appraser who knows older cars.

here's some pics
ok, I just took pics of my Z, here they are:
also, my dad was in a wreck in his neon, the accident was the same type as mine (rear ended), but his was worse:
he was hit by a truck on the way up to Vallejo. I'd have to guess the car will be totaled.

I will tell you this from the pictures you will need a new bumper adn bumper mounts. The hydralics in the mounts will give at 2 mph so the are now shot. Also make sure they did not get bent where they mount up under the gas tank. It doesnt look that bad but this is the stuff to look for.
As for the neon it wont be totalled that is about 5k of damage.

If your not concerned with originality, I'd by a fiberglass bumper from MSA, possibly a front one too. They won't do squat if you get hit again, but they're much cheaper at about $150 a piece. Plius it gives the car a really clean look without the multi-piece construction, or the bumper gaurds.

I stand corrected. You are right the 240 has a metal bracket attached to the rear of the car and bumper. I would also go woth the MSA kit I have it on my Z and if nothing else my gas mileage went from 18-20 up to 25-30. And this is at 85 MPH. I have never driven my car at 65 of 55 to see what kind of mileage I would get. It just takes to dam long to get anywhere at those speeds.

here's one estimate
hey all, I took my Z down to a respectable body shop that my friend told me about (Gunther's Auto Body and Collision). I spoke to Gunther himself, and he was a really nice guy, and everything else. He called up Nissan, or wherever he got his parts from, and here's the parts list with the price for all of it:
Replace-
Right Bumper Guard: 100.00
Center Bumper: 225.00
Left Bumper Guard: 85.00
Right Bumper Guard: 85.00
Right Bumper Impact Strip: 36.06
Right and Left Bumper Guard Pads: 37.00
Right Bumper Bracket: 20.23
Left Bumper Bracket: 20.23
Rear Center Lower Panel: 285.00
(Straighten Right Inner Panel)
Paint-
Mark Interior near Rear: 5.00
Paint Materials: 200.00
Weld Through Primer: 7.50
Extra things needed: 10.00
For just parts, the total was 1116.04
For just labor, it was 1102.20
Sales Tax 86.49
Overall, After Everything is done, the price, in full, is 2304.73
Not too bad, if you ask me. I thought it'd be around 800 or something like that.

Some tard in a BMW pulled out in front of me from oncoming traffic while I was going 40mph. I couldn't stop in time (40mph and 50 feet distance) so i cut to the right, and slid against his front end. Damaged my front suspension, bent in my spindle, so that was toast. Also totalled my fender, headlight bucket, bumper, and dinged the rim.
I got 1700 for the body and 1000 for suspension. Pocketed 1300 from that.

$2300! that's not good. The more it costs to repair the car, the more likely they are to total it. If your car is worth only 2500-3000 then its probably totalled and they'll try to give you $2000 for it.

uh oh....
I just took my 240 down to the body shop that AAA recommended. The guy there said that I'd probably end up getting a salvage title from all of this. I think this sucks some major ***. Since I have some rust spots and paint chips (i.e.- rust spot on the metal under the hatch, paint chips right where the hatch meets the roof of the car) it wouldn't be practical to get it worked on. I think that if what he says is true, I'm going to try to milk NBI (the guy who hit me) for the 2,300 that the other body shop quoted me, then save up some more to get my car repainted, then use the insurance money to pay for the rest of the spray and body work. It's going to be a fiasco I think, but I've got to figure it out!

Take what you can get. If you can get a cash settlement that would be ideal. What ever you do dont let them get your car. I had to buy mine back because i let them take it to their adjuster. They salvaged it and sent me a check. I was really PO,d So I ended up with a salvaged title.
If you dont have a lawyer I can hook you up with a great law firm.
Let me know.

thanks alot man, I don't think it will go that far though. All I really want to do is keep my car from getting a salvage title, and get it fixed. I mean, if that means that I get to drive around with rear end damage for a few months, then so be it. I can tell you that if I do get a settlement check for 2,300, I'll save that baby and spend it on restoring my car!
If you're car is in really good shape, shop around for 240Z's like yours in your area. Tell them you want them to replace it and all those other comparable Zs cost $3500-$5000. Either they buy you one of those cars or get yours repaired for $2300.
not that they'll listen to you, but you could mention it.

lol, thanks for all the help guys. I met with the evaluator from Bristol West, and he told me that they could fix my car for around 800 dollars, which is kinda low. I'm going to see if I can get AAA to go with something higher so that I can have some extra money to fix some other things on the car. If I have to settle for less than 2,300, then I'm fine with that. I'd rather get something around 1,500, but if I can find enough Z's around here for more than 3,000, then I'm in good shape.

the insurance adjuster called, and my dad talked to them. They decided not to total my car, and they are cutting me a check for $1800. I think this is quite good, because the repairs (just the bumper and all the components, and the metal behind the bumper), is going to cost me close to $500. That means I've got some left over if I want to go get a decent paint job, which I think I might do.
