280zx turbo questions
finally decided on a 280zx turbo build-up for my 240z He-He,so my question is this:
how much reliable power can i make from this motor? with an intercooler?
since i am definitely going for an intercooler and i'm on a budget it will be sourced from a junk yard, what size I.C. do i ask for?(size thickness,e.t.c.) some thing sufficient.
my mechanic says not to bother stroking it out since i'm on a budget so that leaves a little money for.....shall i say more BOOST?
how much reliable boost can a stock turbo run?
what other kind of turbo can i look for ?and what cars can they be sourced from??
finally what can i do to improve ignition?
so far i have the stock computer, motor, turbo, harness
and i want to shop for an intercooler.
if i dont get another turbo what can i do to this one to better improve its performance??
now after all this is done how much power will i be making?
thanks all.

Re: 280zx turbo questions
I have never had a tubo, but this is from what I have read about them.
The stock engine/head gasket can take 300hp fine.
The factory turbo can get you to 240 or 250hp at the wheels. You will need to do some good intake and exhaust work to let the turbo get that much power though. You will also need an intercooler for that much boost. You'll be looking at 13lbs or more. I think the stock turbo maxes out there.
You can reliably run the factory turbo at that boost level. You will want to upgrade your oil cooler to a much larger one. I'm not sure on how big of an intercooler you want, but most people just use the late 80's Chrysler Starion intercooler.
Get a large exhaust. 3 inch downpipe and exhaust. The turbo itself creates lots of backpressure. If you go with a different turbo, get a water cooled one.
For 250hp+ you will need a larger fuel rail and fuel lines to and from the gas tank. Motorsort auto sells and upgraded fuel injection computer for turbo models. its a little pricy, but a good addition to a powerful turbo setup.
