240z will not engage into any gear

My 71 240z will not get into any gear while pedal is pressed to the floor. i had my friend press the clutch pedal as i watched the clutch fork. the fork moved in as he pressed the pedal. fluid level is good. the car has been parked for a little over a year while i was out of state for school, and worked fine before i left.
any help would be great.

Welcome to ZDriver! We've got quite the Z group in Seattle.

How far did the clutch fork move? Just because it moved, doesn't mean it moved as far as it should. Doing a quick system bleed should fix the situation. Also check for fluid leaking from the inside cabin part of the master (where the pedal plunges inside the master).

will it go into gear if the car is off?

It might just be a stuck clutch. The fork can move and still not pull the clutch disc away.

Try depresing the clutch pedal (with car off) and then rocking your foot to the side so the pedal snaps back up. Do this 10 times.

Then start the car and pump the pedal. see if it goes into gear.

If that doesn't work, make sure the parking brake is on good. (and works)
Put the car in 4th gear, push the clutch pedal in, and then start the car.
If something sounds really bad, turn the car off right away and get back on Zdriver.com

if all that fails, could just have a screwed up tranny. bent shift fork or something. luckily our trannies arent worth squat so you can pick on up for next to nothing

hey I was gonna post the same problem . I already bleed the system but to no avail. Any other ideas? I recently swapped out the diff for a 4.38 but I' pretty sure that wouldn't cause the problem.

So your master & slave are both fully moving??? You've watched the slave push the fork out?

so i tried both suggestions, bleeding clutch system and the pedal idea. still not going into gear. when i put the car in 4th and tried starting, there was no terrible noise, it was actually quite pleasant... the car just slowly pulls itself forward...
so could this mean the fork is bent? i have terrible diagnosis skills.

If you can put it in to all gears w/ the motor off, it's something wrong w/ the hydraulics or clutch unit. It's not likely that the fork is bent unless you ran over a curb or huge rock the last time you drove it... you would have known before now anyway.

I suggest RE-CHECKING that the clutch slave cylinder is fully moving when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor. Make sure it pushes the fork A LOT... a little pulse isn't the correct amount (or bleeding back down).

So i finally had the chance to get back to the z, replaced the slave cylinder and re-bled. the fork still only moves about 1 1/2 inches. everytime i've bled the clutch though (3 times in the past month), the fluid starts out silver. this means something metal is deteriorating, right? I think I may replace the master today, unless anyone has any other ideas....

Did you bleed the master too?

When bleeding the master & slave, you kept bleeding them until a steady stream of brake fluid comes out right?

yeah it was coming out clean, and i kept it full so it wouldnt suck air into it...
i'm thinking i'll just replace the master and bleed it again. i rarely get a chance to work on it because i usually have no way of getting to it (its about 20 miles from where i live and i dont have transportation) so im just going to go for it.

Not sure if anyone cares to know, but here's the update. i finally had the time to drop the tranny to inspect the clutch, and it turns out the flywheel was rusted solid to the clutch disc, which was rusted solid to the pressure plate... so there ya have it. replaced with centerforce clutch and fidanza flywheel. threw on a rear main seal while i was up there just for good measure.
