Stock 240Z shifter very loose feel

I want to tighten up the feel of my shifter, I thought about changing the shifter but don't know much about that job and what it takes it is (currently stock). My boots are fairly shot, but there is just too much space between the shifter end and the top of the trans. There are those little metal 3/4 of cirle type clip on bushings? but is there some way to tighten this up? after market rubber or urathan discs or something? Or is there a place to get a new short shifter with those right bushing on it ?
its a 12/71 240Z
thanks
MIke
