shifter starting to feel really warm?

Has anyone had there shifter start to heat up in temp? Could it be the cat is getting so hot its heating up the shifter handle? If so, does the cat ever just run rich and can get clogged? Please help me....

my 91 tt used to do the same thing, they shifter would get warm.... never hott tho,and it didnt make that grinding noise your talking about..... you could just be paranoid tho and hearing something else, who knows.... hard to say withough being in the car tho..... anyway, it was never a problem in my Z, hopefully it wont be in yours either

I'd check the fluid level. It could have a small leak somewhere. If it gets low it will get warmer than usual and might start making some noises.

I could just be paranoid about that sound. Though i definitely will change the trans fluid.

Here's another question. whats thed difference between gutting the pre-cat and just straight piping to the second cat, eliminating the precat all togehter. i know the O2 sensor now has no where to go, but can i get rid of that too?

Gutting a cat = the cheap, ghetto, wrong way to do it. If you don't want the cats, use test pipes.

so the test pipes eliminate both cats and just hooksup to the mufflers?
i'm asking because some times when i accelerate the exhaust sounds like its clogged and almost like its not pushing out. It's not until i push down on the pedal a little more heavy then it starts to sound normal. i'm thinkin the cats are clogged...weird?!?

um... It doesn't sound like your cats are clogged... it would be more noticable at full throttle, as more exhaust is going through the same size pipes...

This is a test pipe:

the top pic is for a twin turbo...yours will look differently. also you only have 1 set of cats and your 02 sensors are in your headers(no downpipes). bottom is for an older Z

Its normal for the shifter to get warm. also, it sounds like you have some syncros going out. try changing the tranny fluid to Redline. it should smooth out the shifts and possibly get rid of the syncro grind for a while

You ever pulled a tranny apart before? There's a reason we have "transmission shops." Engine work is cake-walk compared to rebuilding a tranny.

i really doubt you can do it yourself.. you do one thing wrong witch the tranny open it can fall apart.. i doubt you need to change them yet... jsut go with what we said so far change the tranny fluid.. and redline is a great brand didnt think of them. and yeah if you car is an NA not a TT its the mid pipe you replace.. all you do is disconnect your aiv hoses i believe its teh aiv its just an air pump to warm your cats faster and direct bolt in on the mid pipes.... no big deal.. if you have a TT then you need new down pipe that is a test pipe... and they usually come with bungs for the O2 sensor then and you just put them back in the new piping. gutting your cats is cheap and wont really do anything.. it will flow just the same if not worse because it will just cause turbulence inside there.

Just wondering,....when did it become ghetto to gut the cats? For those of you who live in a state that is not very strict in regards to smog requirements and you don't have the money to buy test pipes, then gutting the cats is an improvement.

yah know I have had that grinding noise. the cause was overheated trans and the center shaft has a bearing and that was making noises. It could also be the throw out bearing. the syncro's are very soft. just buy the new 97 spec trans from Z1. It has upgrade internals. its most likly throwout bearing, or overheat centershaft, not worth fixing

first check yer tranny fluid. 70k miles without a change--why did these boyZ not smash you for that one?? they must love ya......do that first. noise keeps up--check tranny then worry aboot the other stuff.

they do a visual on the cars here--if you do pipes thru the cat mite work--but you might still get the wrong numbers for smog.........does the noise change when letting clutch out??or is it constant???
if just throwout bearing, change the beeyotch. if high miles on the car, use higher weight tranny fluid. same with engine oil. 10-30 is for brand new cars. use 20-50 on the older sportycars............they love it and last longer........

I Think You Guys Are Overthinking This

your shifter gets warm cause you have two rubber gaskets-heat/noise shields that are inbetween the shifter boot and the transmission itself. Sometimes these rip/dry rot or just come unclipped from each other or the hole they are supposed to block. Just make sure these are in place before you go replace anything big and expensive.
