L28 into a 240z? 280zx trans?
Hi, I'm thinking about getting a 3.2l stroker (L28 base) put into the 240z that i finally end up buying. One major question though: will it fit into the stock motor mounts and everything without any problems?
One more thing: Should I swap in a 280zx 5-speed trans. while im at it? Does this hook up to a 240z without any problems? Thanks for your feedback.

i believe that it will line right up... and as for the 5 speed... YES! you are gonna want the overdrive especially if you are gonna have a massive motor. another thought, you might want to get a lower (higher numerical) differential gear so that you have good acceleration with the 5 speed.... the 280zx r200 w/ 3.70 should be sufficient.
and you shouldn't have any problems installing the 5 speed in your 240. do a search on hybridz.org for the tech article on it. that way you know what you're getting into

i have a simuler set up in mt 72 240z but mine is a 3.1 stroker and i have a 5 speed in mine and it all gose in with no mods. but you mite want to chaneg out the ruber bushings in it first with the urithan ones i can tell you from my expireanc that it made a funaminal difrenc and the moter mounts i used were enrgy supetion mounts also.
i also keept my 240's origenal rear end in it and i like it i have all kinds of power. i dont like the 3.7 open dif i have it on my z31 v8 convertion and i whish i had swopet it out when i had the chance.
but its all up to you.

not to hijack your thread, but this is to dr. buddha: which 5 speed do you have? is it the early L278 one or is it the "turbo" one? i have the early one and the first gear is like 3.07 compared to the stock 3.5, and it's a REALLY tall gear....

also if he's got he built stroker then he won't need a taller gears
also depending on the year of your 240 you may or may not have issues with the transmission mounting, the early cars 70-early71, used a shifter hole that mounted a bit further back, you might have to hack the hole open a bit, also if it's a turbo 5 speed (easily identified by the 4 bolts holding the shifter plate on) your gonna have to adjust the trans mounts as it's about an inch from lining up

The T5 is not a Nissan transmission.
You will have to use the T5 driveshaft as well to get the proper slip yoke. It will need to be shortened. The ends of the ZX turbo driveshaft neck down at either end, unlike most Nissan driveshafts that are the same diameter the entire length. Since driveline shops like to cut out the ends and not the middle, this complicates the shortening project and you may get turned away. Also, the rear flange on the driveline does not match the Nissan flange. You'll need the differential flange off the front of the R200 from a turbo Z. (automatic turbos are not compatible driveshafts)
or, have the driveline shop change out the rear U-joint. You're looking at some bucks in a custom driveshaft unless you have a really good machinist working with you. You might as well bring the driveshaft in and use the front splines from the turbo driveline and have the rest of the driveline made custom to fit your Nissan differential. The rear transmission mount must be made and set at the right height. On a car with a solid mounted differential, you want the driveline to be exactly inline with the rear of the transmission or your U-joints may go out.
