78 Z differential vs. 81-83 differential?

Do the 78 280Z's use the same differential as the 81-83 280ZX's? I'm not concerned about the gearing, just the type and if a differential from an 81-83 can be a direct swap into a 78 280Z.

It's a straight swap.

depends on what transmission you have. Manual then yes the r-200 is a direct swap.

The later S30's had the diff moved back about 2 inches. You need the mustache bar from a '76-'78, the front cross member and mount from the R200 and the drive shaft from a '74. The R200 means a 200mm diameter ring gear. Plan on replacing the bushings with urethane. The R200 is bullet proof but I broke the mount first time I dropped the hammer hard. Check out my post on rear diff snubber, can't be broken but still isolates the vibration. Solid mounts will vibe your teeth out.

Thanks Tom. Zack had his diff go out on him, and I was going to pull another one and ship it to him.

And i forgot to put somthing in that post. I was askin the diff in the rear end of those two. just forgot the word Rear End. Oops.
