Wheel / Rim Cap - Front Tires

Hello,

I searched the forums and didn't find what I was looking for. Could be the terms/words I used.

I have a 1982 280zx. The center cap of my rims won't fit on the front wheels (first photo). Yet I know that it is possible because I have seen it many times, including the 2nd photo below. Yes I know the rims are larger, yet why do you think that is? How can I do or modify my setup to accommodate? Or if I get custom rims made, what should I consider when making them, so I don't have this issue?

Thanks,

-M
