81 280zx Fuel Problem

hey im new to zdriver and this is my first post and i had a couple questions about my new zx

first of all it wont start, i bought it for 500 bucks and it didnt have a fuel pump
the guy i bought it from squirted fuel with a squirt bottle straight into the intake manifold and sure enough it started and idled while he was squirting the fuel into it, so anyways i put a fuel pump on it and flushed the gas tank (had 5 gallons of 5 year old fuel in it, looked like coca-cola) put 3 gallons of 91 in it and it wont start still, when the key is on i hear the fuel pump running and i pulled the line off between the rails and the filter and put it in a bottle and it was pumping fast and a good stream, but when connected the rails and with the key on the pump stays on and i hear a hissing from the pressure regulator, is this supposed to hissing when the car isnt running?

any advice would help, thanks!

Welcome to ZDriver!

The fuel pressure regulator is probably leaking. Clamp off the return hose after the regulator & try starting it. Also, verify that it's getting spark at all plugs.

just fyi the fuel pressure regulator is on the out take side of the fuel line
it regulates fuel by allowing pressure beyond a cirtian point to leave that way all injestors have the same presure

i think your problems lyes in the possible fact that you have the two hoses reversed

in case thats confusing

the line from the pump does not go to the regulator it goes to the circle rail then after all pressure is equalised it leaves the regulator

best thing you can do is down load the repair manual since your starting from scratch

After five years of sitting, you may as well replace the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor, upgrade to an MSD coil (Oreillys: $54) and probably see about the injectors as well, however they probably won't be as bad as the former.

Let's start w/ the basics....

A motor needs 3 things to start:
-proper air
-proper fuel
-proper spark

Is there spark at all 6 plugs? Are the injectors spraying? Is the ecu getting power?

try starting it off by squrting some fuel in the intake manifold just to give it a little push my car did that when i first bought it but only the first start up

Pretty sure

you have a fuel injector(s) problem.
It's been sitting for 5 years and esp if it was ethanol blended fuel - oh boy, those injectors will be goobed up for sure.
The car ran when the fuel system was totally bypassed - squirting fuel into the intake mani did away with the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel rail, injectors, everything.
You proved fuel flow by taking line loose at rail, so all the rest seems to be working right up until the injectors.
Depending on your mechanical aptitude, it is possiblt to remove the injectors, and partially disassemble some types, basically removing the clogged up, greenish blue varnished fuel/ethanol mixture on the filter baskets (if so equipped) and then see if it'll at least run.
Best bet would be to have the injectors cleaned, balanced, flow checked, etc. This is done in an ultrasonically, nothing over the counter and poured into the fuel tank will open a set of fully clogged up injectors.
I think it usually runs about 20-25 's each, so probably a lot less expensive then new injectors...

But the three things an internal combustion engine needs to run is
1. Compression
2. Ignition
3. Fuel
Look it up even at the wrong air mixture an engine will still run. And the three questions you asked at the end is answered by Your last question!
The proper questions are:
1. Does it have compression?
2: Is it getting fuel?
3: Does it have spark?

Interesting, you know how to use the word "proper", yet you didn't understand that word in my posts.

You agree with my posts, yet you neglect to mention that an engine can still start and run with one or more dead or low compression cylinders.

A compression check is a good idea... along with checking for spark and PROPER fuel. Yay!

+2 for resurrecting the thread.
