Re: Strut cartridge choices
I have the same car, same year and about to start looking for them as well. From what I've been priced so far that sounds ok to me wether they're any good or not is another question.I assume the price above is for each and not a pair? Do you think they would work ok on 2 inch lowered springs?

Re: Strut cartridge choices
yeah they were each prices inc gst. i'll try to get some prices on KONI and TOKICO and let you know. I dont know if lowering 2" requires a change of strut , idon't think so but i'll check with a freind of mine who works at a suspension place.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
ichecked with the guy at the susp place he said if the springs were off the shelf from a spring supplier for your model then they should fit with the standard type strut . but they are not experts on early Z's. 1 inch to 1 1/2" is generally not a problem on most strut suspension's. Perhaps get a quote from a PEDDER'S agent and pick there brains , see what parts the quote includes you may need some camber plates for the front struts.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
Go KYB over Monroe anyday (and the Monroes are made in my town...). I've got Koni 'Special-D' inserts in my 240Z, $360 a pair 5 years ago. Be careful when putting stiff suspension in your Z, I found that my car had heaps more grip, but was very abrupt when losing traction.
i.e. all then nothing, no tire-squeal, no understeer, just 4-wheel drift.
I turned the shocks down to minimum & that helped the situation.
I've got KYB's in both my Skylines (factory electric, aftermarket fixed & aftermarket adjustable models) & they are excellent value & quaility, but firmer ride.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
hello Ben with your koni's did you change to stiffer springs as well, if not were the Koni's what you hoped they would be , what would you buy next time . Koni pricing at the moment is about $420 pair, ouch , against kyb @ $180 pair . with the Koni's on their softest setting were they a firmer ride than the kyb in your Skylines.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
Yes I've been told not to get Monroes and went out and bought KYB's. I got em for $147 a pair through a friend that said it was trade price. he also told me to put something called bump stops on em so it cant bottm out the strutt?? There're only 25 each so I bought them too. As far as the springs go I bought 2inch lowered Kings for $220 (set 4) through another mate.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
Hi,
Yeah I did the naughty thing & did it all at once....
Nolathane bushes (F+R)
K-Mac springs & sway bars
Koni Special-D Inserts.
Pedders bump stops & dust covers.
As far as I can remember (the car's been off the road since mid '99) the ride was very good. The car tended to lose both ends at the same time though (with 200+ L24ET HP). I will probably change the rate once I'm driving the car again to give a little oversteer bias (stiffer at the rear). Time will tell.
The KYB's are great, if they're available check out the KYB 'Super Special (for street)' adjustables.
I reckon the Koni's on softest + standard KYB's are about the same.

Re: Strut cartridge choices
You can also get adjustable KYB's too. The 'Super Special' series. I have got a pair for the front of my DR30 on order (which just happens to be the same as the 240Z rear). They are adjustable on the top of the cartridge for inserts & via a **** on struts (see the latest HPI mag for a pic of them on Ben Ellis' R34 25GTt)
