Navigation lid is stuck

On my friend's 350Z, the lid for the navigation screen appears to be stuck/broken. It's mostly open, but apparently not open far enough to activate the GPS screen. She doesn't care if the lid is stuck in an open position, but the problem is that the GPS won't go on with the door in its current position (I'm assuming it only goes on if the door is fully open). The dealer told her it was a problem with the lid's motor and that it would be like $1000 to fix. But I can't imagine why it should be so expensive to swap out a little motor. So do you guys have any ideas about any fixes for this? Perhaps some kind of jury-rig that keeps the door open, and trips the screen activation switch or something?

Indeed!

To be honest I'd bypass the door sensor.

Can anyone tell me if the door sensor is a push-button type, where the door backs up into a push-button style switch? Or is the switch built into the hinge/pivot of the door?
