Tranny won't go in 2nd?

Hey...........i came off the highway last night and downed it into 2nd..and the car wouldn't go!..it made a grinding noise..the same you would hear if you shifted gears and didn't engage the clutch fully..i'm just testing waters here..i've already have on hold- a order for a JDM transmission..installed + tranny 600 bucks total..i'm pretty sure i'm going that route but i just wanted to see if its fixable.

thanks!

What happened when you tried shifting to 2nd during a normal upshift?

... and if you're coming off a ramp and don't have to stop to merge, what then? Complete stop and then start again, after praying that nobody rear-ends though? I assume he was exiting a highway onto a road and had to merge with the road without stopping, thus a required downshift into 2nd or 3rd, depending on speed.

I was coming off the ramp..it has its own lane for a good distance then merges onto the road....it was night time- no traffic..and i didn't downshift at high rpms for the sake of downshifting..just a friendly downshift....prior to that i did enter the on-ramp banging all the gears..i think that contributed to it.

And upshift-downshift it doesn't go into 2nd

It would need a rebuild to even have a chance at working again... and since rebuilds on Z32 transmissions have a horrible track record (they don't end up working right), I'm gonna recommend that JSpec trans. What year is it from? Make sure it's at least 94+, better if it's 98+.

They should, given that the trans was revised in 93 or 94 and again in 98... thus, they are worth more than a 90-93 one, which will be more likely to have syncro problems.

well thanks for the info! ill make sure to ask.

so the reason its not going in 2nd is because the syncro is gone??

and now 4th gear is kinda hard to get in..( i'm guessing because its beside 2nd gear )

lol beside in the shift pattern doesn't mean beside on the shafts. i'm fairly sure that 1st and 2nd are on one shaft and 3rd and 4th on another? correct me if i'm wrong. at any rate, 4th gear synchros go out too. it has nothing to do with proximity.
