timing belt squealing
#30
i started thinking about what changes were made before the squealing started, and i thought about how now, since it's cold, i have my air conditioner set to a higher temperature; typical for everyone who drives a car. i'm still in the process of testing this, but it seems like i get a lot less or no squeal when i crank up my car and rev the engine with my AC set to 60 degrees than i get with the AC set to 90 on crank up. after driving for a minute i put the AC back up to a higher temperature from 60. this process seems like it might, for the most part, solve my winter squeal problem.
is everybodies z like this...... sometimes it feels like my air/heat is on when i don't have it turned on. i notice it better and more when i'm at higher speeds. if AC it set 80 or so, i feel some warm air coming into the car through the vents and around the enclosure for my aftermarket radio. if the AC is set to 60 or so, i get the same only with cooler air. so my question is...is my AC on even when i have it off??? i need to know cause that's extra gas and premium gas isn't cheap.
--any and all comments are welcome

The air that you're feeling is just the air being forced through the vents. That's why you feel it more at higher speeds. If you set the air to 'recirculate', then it will stop letting air in the cabin when your driving. By doing this, you may notice that the windows might fog up a bit.
The AC setting scenario that you describe leads me think that your AC belt is the one that's not tight enough. When you have the AC set at 90, do you have the defroster on? If so, then that would explain why it squeals more at 90 than at 60. The AC compressor runs when the defroster is on. This time of year, 60 degrees doesn't happen all that often in the morning. The thermostat tells the system that it's less than 60 degrees and it doesn't need to turn on. At 60 degrees, the AC compressor wouldn't be running. At 90, there's more resistance presented by the AC compressor, so hence the squealing.

today i found out somethin new. i cranked up my Z and turned on my lights as usually, and it started squealing. i turned off the lights and it stopped. so i think it's the alternator squealing. if i get it grounded do u think it'll stop squealing? i know my oil leak is clogging up my alternator slowly.
any help?????
any help?????

It's the belt, not the alternator. Since the oil is leaking into the alternator, plan on replacing it in the near future. The oil is likely coming from the cam seals. I believe Rizz knows all about that.

Hey, my Z did this, too-drove my ex crazy for over a year, so I didn't worry about it much. He did all the things previously suggested, without relief of the problem. Recently I asked my mech (another Z lover) and got the best explanation yet-bent AC idler arm. Unfortunately the engine blew before I could fix the squeal...

damage to the air filter might cause there to be a different noice if for example air intake is restricted or affected. It's not going to cause a squeal. A little off topic but...what do you mean by bent air filter?

I believe the bent air filter was covered in your other thread. It has no effect on your belts squealing. Just like if your "timing" belt is squealing, you have big problems. Have you yet addressed the oil leak issue? This is probably contributing to your belts squealing. If you cleaned off the belts and the squealing went away, and then re-appeared, you might need to clean them again, until you get the oil leak fixed.

I think CC is right about the oil on the belts.
