Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
Hi all.
If you have replaced your BOSE headunit and BOSE speakers in your 90+ Z32 and would like to share your insights please email me at craigerd2@yahoo.com I have a ton of buzzing but I'm only getting a little bit of sound out of the cheap BOSE center speaker. All others humm and pop. I replaced the headunit with a known good one (make me offers if interested in it. Otherwise off to EBAY it goes.)
Tomorrow I start yanking the BOSE crap out. I've been told that once I remove the BOSE speakers I'll no longer have mounting brackets so any advice in that area would be especially appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Anyone wishing to supply the correct brackets can have the BOSE unit I have. It is in great shape.

I"ve been looking all over and cant find the answer to the same question. My 2 back BOSE speakers make noise, and no music comes out at all. How can I fix it....just buy 2 new rear speakers?
I am also installing my clarion DVD player up to my 91z, will it work with all the bose speakers? Any help will do.

If you research Bose systems on the net you will find dealers that can repair your system. The problem is the passive stereo system with each speaker having it's own amp. The doors do get damp inside and this effects the amps. I have intermittent problems with my Bose. I just don't turn on the stereo after a rain storm until the car warms up. I put in the 6 disc in dash CD and have not had any problems.
you might want to look at the following web pages:

or
http://www.carstereohelp.com
I am not endorsing these sites, they are just some that I looked at when researching my Bose.

Re: Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
Thx for the feedback. I looked at those sites and decided it is not cost effective to "fix" a 13 year old system. I yanked all the speakers today and I am working on making templates to hold new speakers in the old bose enclosures. I ordered an antenna coupler to mate the diversity lead with a standard head unit input. My next challenge is to find a radio harness so I can avoid cutting the factory harness. No luck so far Ebay has standard nissan harness but not bose. I'll keep everyone informed as I progress.

What many people have done on Zcar.com is gut the existing bose speakers and rewire the system. The speaker mounting brakets from courtesy are very expensive. So you can simply take the bose black boxes take the tops off gut the inside, run new wiring from the speaker too the stereo (to bypass the amps), fill the boxes with sound-deadening insulation found at any stereo store, and make new cutouts for the lid of the speaker box for the new speakers. You simply take the bose lid, make an outline of it on particle board, do the same for the new speaker size, cutout, bolt new lid straight to old bose enclosure. Be sure to line the wood with silicone sealant where the wood meets the plastic to improve acustics and there you go. Free quality speaker brackets for about $15. Instead of the $150 for Nissan's.

What size headunit do you have? My 3.5in bolted right into the factory harness with different size bolts. Then I ordered the pocket from courtesy to fill in the gap. You should also eliminate the center channel if you haven't already. If runs off the front left and right signals compromising sound quality.

Re: Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
Thx for the info. I have not decided on the head unit yet. There are so many choices! I am going to avoid motorized units. Sounds like just another thing to break. I'll most likely go with a Sony or JVC. thay plays mp3 too. I'm going to take the advice about making a template. The rear brackets are cheap ($12 each) from Courtesy but there is no sound enclosure so I think using the BOSE boxes are the best bet. The harness I was referring to was the electrical/speaker coupler. Sounds like I'll need to cut it and wire in the harness that comes with the radio I select although I'm looking at :
http://www.linkmeup.com/cablelink.htm#Change
to see if that might help. I am going to delete the center channel but leave the BOSE grill there since I don't need the pocket. Any advice on the correct size speakers to use in the doors and rear?

Oh you were referring to the wiring harness. Wherever you buy your stereo for they should supply the correct wiring harness so you can just plug the factory wiring to the aftermarket wiring. As for size of the speakers it is up to what you want to do. You can have as large as 6" in front and 4x6s or 6.5" in the back, although I have heard of someone using 5x7s in the back. It just depends what you want, the nice thing is you are cutting the templates so you can pick what sound you prefer. Personally I would go with a 4" or 3.5" speaker w/ component in front, and 4x6s in the back, 5x7s if they fit but I didn't check to see if 5x7s would fit when I had my bose enclosures out.
As for a bypass unit, you cannot use them with new speakers. The bose amps power the speakers using a very low omh load. Most speakers cannot operate on the bose amps. It is better to just run new wires from the stereo to the speakers and avoid the amps. I bought the bypass being lazy and now my front-left amp is starting to go (occasional buzzing) and soon I will have to go in and rewire my system.
From you latest post it seems like you want to replace your speakers then at another time replace the head unit. Don't do this it is a waste of money. You have to buy a $40 adapter and their is no gaurantee that the system will work. You should do it all at once.

Re: Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
Okay, I am having the same problem. Both of my rear speakers are blown (or the amp's blown), so I am going to re-wire some aftermarket speakers there, my quesiton is... can I buy this:
http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...de=28165-00001
And use 4"x6" speakers where the rear speakers are? Then re-wire the rear speakers all the way to the headunit...that brings me to my second question. I have a Clairon DVD player. If I rewire the rear speakers to that head unit, can I still use the factory front speakers and just get the BOSE adapter for the head unit? I am confusing my self, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!

Re: Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
First off, yes you can buy those brackets and fit the 4x6s to run in the back. Just rewire to the head-unit. Second, yes you will be able to run the front BOSE speakers off the unit if you buy they adapter. The one I have is setup so you can run up to 8 speakers through it how ever you want. You will just have to adjust the gains on the front speakers (on the bypass adapter) to even the sound. Although I recommend replacing all of the speakers if possible since the BOSE speakers are POS and you will probably have to replace all of the BOSE units soon if two have gone out, and wiring the adapter is a pain in the as*. Also, the adapter costs $40.

Re: Replacing BOSE in 90 NA
Oh yea I forgot to mention if you just replace the rear speakers and run the fronts off the bypass adapter. Do not connect the rear speakers to the adapter, run them directly to the stereo's rear speaker outputs. You will need to wire the front speakers from the speaker to the adapter to the head-unit.
