Turbo removal question

From what I have read online it people say that the engine needs to be pulled to remove the turbos. But on Mitchell ondemand it says it can be done without pulling the engine? I attached the procedure as an image.

I am just interested in replacing the bearings.. any info would be great.

engine has to be pulled. I would love to see someone get the oil lines off with the engine in.... and doing it that way you have to replace not only the turbo gaskets, but then the manifold gaskets, and have fun scraping the old gasket off with the engine in as well....

It is easier (read: EASIER) to pull the engine to do turbo work than to do it with the engine in the chassis. And if you're intimidated by an engine pull, this job isn't for you.

Btw, don't bother rebuilding stock turbos... it never works out. Just get Sport 500's or new stock CHRA's.

Well the reason I am asking is because there is a 1992 z32 for sale its all stock except the wheels. It's got around 120k on it, and the turbo bearings are bad. Everything else is in excellent shape. It's been serviced at the dealer every time and he's got maintenance records going back 10 years. The guy is asking $6750.

Does this sound like a deal?

I can pull an engine, but would rather not.. but if I did, the stock turbo's would be replaced, adding $1k to the bill.

lol... you do realize that you can't just disassemble a turbo and replace its bearings, right? They spin at over 100,000rpms... they need to be balanced and assembled *precisely.* But rebuilt stock turbos have a considerably high failure rate... you'd be going through all the work again soon after.

By the way... I got my first 1990 Z32TT for $5490, rust free with good turbos. Got my last 1990 Z32TT for $5000 with good turbos as well. Neither of them had much more than 120k miles. Starting to get the idea on the asking price?

Yeah, I am hearing that. The guy just put a new rims/tires, and stereo in it. I know these parts don't usually add to the resale price tag too much. This thing is probably a 8 or 9 out of 10 cosmetically. He did note the fin was messed up as well..

Maybe I'll haggle a little and see where I can get on the price. He just put it up for sale today so I'll let it sit for a while and see what he'll do.

Money invested into modding the car only counts about 10%-20% toward the resale value, if at all. My Z's both had Borla cat-back, pop chargers, one had aftermarket front shocks, both had aftermarket stereos...

If the turbos were fine, I'd say it's worth more than that. But with blown turbos, it's worth less. And I don't think anyone on here or tt.net would disagree with me on that.

what rims and tires were 2200?!?!?!

and after paint the "fin" will be more than 500....

full turbo replacement including labor would be more than 3500, since any shop will be pulling the engine. just to have stock turbos rebuilt it's around 700 to 1000....

what deck speakers and amp were 1000?!??!! better be 5.1 dolby surround sound in that ho....

I will trust you on that, I see the prices for new turbos. (Ouch) I think I am going to pass on this one.. Maybe if it was more around the $5k range I might go for it. I am in search of a Z32 TT and it seems like good ones are hard to find at least where I am. People generally want too much it seems... uhg...

ok a quick google search and clicking the first link shows...

Kenwood 8402 power amp = 129.99
Pioneer DEH-P7800MP is discontinued but appeared to be around 278 when it was still being produced, but we'll just round up and say $300.
and i seriously doubt the infinity speakers where 570....
the 6 1/2" are 69.99... but for the sake of arguement we'll say they are 150 (just picking a midrange price for some pretty good 6 1/2" speakers)
so thats 580 for audio stuff, definatly NOT 1k...

coudln't find a price on the GTR1's but found a price on GTR3's and GTR10's and 7's.... and I could MAYBE see those with some of the ultra high performance tires yokohama has being 2200.

Yeah your right.. this sounds like a bad deal. I don't really want to buy a project anyway. I want a daily driver. Thanks for the help, I read over the buyers guide so I know what to look out for. I'll stick around the forum cause it's just a matter of time before I too own a Z32tt.
