Looking for advice and maybe some experiences
First, the introduction. I have a 1990 N/A bought on a whim as a toy. Learned the hard way how expensive and how much of a pain they are to work on but I still enjoy the car.
Now the problem. I have a spun rod bearing that caused minor scoring on the crank and metal contamination in the engine. I want to keep the vehicle N/A for various reasons and have narrowed it down to rebuilding the current motor(new pistons, rods, etc) and replacing the crank, rebuilding and machining the crank with the correct bearings or buying another motor and rebuilding it. Either JDM or USDM. I would appreciate input, recomendations and horror/success stories about the options if you have them. Thanks in advance.

turning the crank is usually discouraged because the treatment on the friction surfaces is so hard that when turned, it actually weakens it, and it won't last as long. there are surely places that can do it, and i don't really know anything else to say on that.
if you can get your hands on a low mileage crank or a new one, that's the way to go.

Nitrided crankshafts can easily be welded and ground without concern. A .010 undersize grind will cause some of the benefits of nitriding to be lost. At .030+ undersize, nearly all of the nitriding benefits are lost. Therefore, it is recommended to have the crankshaft hardened again after grinding.
