JDM motor issues
JDM motor issues
I was wondering what some of the issues that JDM motors commonly have are. I know they can be kind of a hit or miss issue, but what are some of the common issues? leaks? noises? Stuff that you can tell by not tearing into the motor or pulling any stuff off. Thanks.
Typically with JDM Motors, the best thing to expect, is that the Motor will need a full rebuild. I hate to say it, but it's true. You seriously never know what you're getting. The salesmen might sling you some BS like "All of our engines are of the highest condition, we perform leak-down and compression tests on all our engines"
The truth is... They've never seen what they're sending you. Granted, there are companies that keep stock... I would suggest buying from one of these companies, especially if they have a guarantee. Just keep a heads up for the shady companies that won't supply compression test results, pictures, or any other information.
Just use your mind when spending an excess of $3,000 on something you've never seen

Well, I'm looking into getting another TT and I found a fairly nice TT. The only thing I'm warry of is that the PO put a JDM motor in it since it needed new turbos. There's brand new sport 500s and brand new 555cc injectors on the motor. This leads me to assume that the plenum was at least pulled. I was wondering what are some things to look for when I go check out this car.
well I figured that much, but I was wondering if there are any particular things that JDM motors have issues with. I did some searching and I'm understanding that the issues are that some of them are basically just beat up VGs. Lots of leaks and bad compression results. Typical worn/abused motor stuff.
