Exhaust Help!

1996 Twin Turbo

Okay so I failed to notice the testpipes I ordered do not have o2 bungs. I'll be getting o2 bungs welded in tomorrow question is my friend said that those secondary set or o2 sensors require a good amount of heat to get a correct reading AKA- the cats make them work. He said even with the o2 sensors plugged into my testpipes that the o2 senors wont get hot enough for the ECU to read them and that my ECU will run a base map and will run rich to be safe. Is this true?

I figure alot of people with 96's have testpipes so there has to be someway for it to work correctly.

Thanks Tim

i don't get it. you are supposed to plug them into that cats, or the presence of the cats makes the exhaust on that side of the cats hotter?

I have never heard of O2 sensors needing to be warmed up to function properly... furthermore, test pipes do not get any cooler than catalytic converters. Stop listening to your friends... the only friends I have who I would take Z-car advice from are the friends I met on Z-car forums.

I figured he was full of ****. Didn't seem very correct. Sucks tho I rounded one off so bad I had to cut it off now I need to buy a new o2 sensor. Also my testpipes are leaking where they connect to the Hi-Power Exhaust. I'm going to a muffler shop tomorrow getting o2 bungs welded in and have the leak fixed. Also the testpipes didnt come with gaskets to connect to the down pipes (probably becasue stock doesn't) so I have to get those put on and my mufflers are uneven so I'll have them fix that too. Gonna be expensive but worth it in the long run. As of tonight even with leaks and no o2 sensors the new exhaust is Butt Dyno approved, hopefully tomorrow it will be approved by my ears as well.

Edge Racing ($145) @ conceptzperformance actually only place I found them. I couldn't afford specialtyZ testpipes quite yet $300-$400 =(. I figure once I get a nice set of downpipes I'll get a really nice set of testpipes (possibly with highflow cats so I dont have to run around illegally.)

I Got my exhaust fixed and a new o2 sensor (had to cut one off) I actually have to buy another o2 sensor cuz the one I though I saved had half the thread stripped off. Guess I better get my old cats and run a tap through the threads... thanks for the quick replies yesterday!

Just so you know, high flow cats are retarded in just about every sense of the word.

I've heard of people still failing emissions tests with them.

And there are almost no performance increases with high flow cats.

Your best option is to get some heat shields welded onto the test pipes to make them look like cats, and then swap in your stock cats when it comes time to test.

And why would you consider buying different test pipes later on? Unless it's to go from 2.5 inches to 3, there's no point. Test pipes are the single mod that I say brand doesn't matter, as long as they fit. Mine don't line up perfectly, but they only cost $100 and with the some finesse, they bolt in just fine.

When you cut corners, you normally have to glue them back on at some point.

1st- I suppose your right with some finessing they worked fine. 2nd- I had a highflow cat on my Integra and it passed just fine (just letting you know) 3rd- My Z only has 88K on It and when I bought it and had it smogged 2-3 months ago It passed amazingly (Even read 0 on one of the things it tests for) Needless to say I had no reason to replace my o2 sensors.

I would of bought 2 new ones when I had the bungs welded in and had them installed but I had finished my exhaust the night b4 @ 11PM and did not notice that half of the thread on the o2 sensor I thought I saved was stripped off. They let me know they could make it go in but I would have to re-tap the o2 bung whenever I removed the sensors. So I had him install the new one and plug up the other hole until I could go buy the other o2 sensor. I wasn't trying to cut corners in any way.

Thanks Again!
Tim

P.S- The exhaust isnt that loud so I'm not worried about it looking like it has cats.

We do but when I go to smog the car I'll be swapping my stock exhaust back on. I just meant I'm not worried about getting pulled over and then it looking like I do have cats for the cops to see.
