Unhappy Transmission Gear Oil Change Nightmare

Today I got some Royal Purple synthetic 75W-90 gear oil ($18.95/QT) and was going to put some in my transmission (5-speed) in my 300ZX. I jacked up the car, placed it on jack stands plus the jack....so far so good...then I drained out, thru the drain plug at the bottom, all the existing gear oil. Placed the plug back in... then there's the "fill plug" about half way up the side of the transmission case. It wouldn't come off. Tried everything...Finally I gave up, put all the tools away, drop the car back to the ground, and took (drove) it to a transmission shop about a mile away. THEY couldn't get it off either! They wanted $100 to remove the exhaust and the cross member to get access to the plug better. I took the car back home (without any trans gear oil in the case.) So now it is in the garage and has no gear oil in the transmission!!!!!
So that was a drag. It had been PERFECT, now I can't drive it until I can find a way to get the fill plug out. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Does anyone out there know a secret to getting that fill plug out??

1/2 torque wrench 1 foot long did the job for me.. anything else like a 1/2 socket wont work.. i would tell u to use a 1/2 torque wrench 100% sure that should work i bought mine from autozone for like 15 bucks...

Be Smarter than the Transmission

Well after no one not even a transmission shop could get the fill plug out, and having drained out the old gear oil thru the drain plug, I noticed there's an odd shaped gizmo mounted on the tranny near the top of the transmission that's held on with two 10MM bolts. Took that off and using a pump, put 2 and a half quarts of my purple synthetic gear oil in there, then put the gizmo back on. DONE! Screw the fill plug, all you need is a way to get the gear oil into the trans. Now it is full again. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZoom!!!!!!

Hehe thX! There's no need to fear; Underdog is here!!!

TIGHTEN IT A LITTLE THEN TRY TO LOOSEN IT UP...
Before you do that, soak the plug with pbblaster, the stuff is avaliabe in autozone, kragen, and etc. Let is soak good for a few hours and with the wrench give it a try. What the stuff does is help aliviate any tension in the threads and help lossen any rust there is. Just be careful not to pull to hard or you could strip the treading or damage something. The reason why the foot long wrench would help is it because of the leverage. the fulcrum aka the socket at the tip of the wrench recieves more torque for when you pull the wrech at the handle. Just a quick lesson for ya about mechanical advantage.

Hope that helps,

Allen

The plug wins, but so did I!

Well we did use PB Blaster, and tried every tool in the shed...which is a lot of tools! I even took it to transmission shop, and even they couldn't get the plug off. All I wanted to do was change the trans fluid/gear oil to the new syn cool stuff. Now that it's changed it will be a year or so before it needs changing again, and I'll remember to fill it where we filled it this time... that plug can stay where it is until there's no car left for all I care! So long as the bottom drain plug comes out to drain, and the fill is enabled using the hole we used...who needs the fill plug to come out? The factory service manual says to pour in 1.9 Liters, which is just a little over 2 Quarts....we poured in 2 1/2 Quarts. Car drives Great. I'm happy. So is the car. "We all win?" time for ice cream!!!!:s-redeemer:

its good to know

it's good to know that if your fill plug won't budge, you can still fill the trans using the other hole and a little pump! Otherwise it would have had to go to yet another shop ...and they wanted to remove the exhaust pipes! Thank God my Z didn't have to get tooken apart by those neanderthals!

Just a side note: You can also fill the transmission, with the shifter removed, from the top. This is best when you're forced to pour from a jug (no pump). You'd still want that side plug out so you'd have an indicator of when it was full, unless it was dry to start with and you were putting the exact capacity in.

ok this is what i did in cases similare to this, you know how on floor jacks the handles come off and you got about a 3foot hollow tube, i have a socket wrench (largerone) that fits perfectly in that put them together for a 3 foot breaker bar and that gets almost anything off, or breaks the bolts, but soemtimes you gotta do what you gotta do if its gonna break its gonna break no way to prevent that.

JohnZBoy had it right.
That's how I fill it, so much easier.
