thought it was an exhaust leak
Ive got an 85 n/a that for a long time i thought it had an exhaust leak. It made all the classic noises that you would expect-hollow, tinny, raspy, louder on acceleration. I just replaced all the manifold studs and gaskets, had all new pipes and muffler installed, and its still making almost the same sound. Now i only get noise when there is a load on the engine, so i cant tell exactly where the noise is coming from at idle. The entire system is welded with the only break at the down pipe. Got rid of the cat too so no flanges there. My exhaust guy swears there is no leak anywhere and ive gone over it with a fine tooth comb and it all looks good to me. So my question is this - is there anything else that sounds like an exhaust leak when it starts to fail. I changed the timing belt less than 10,000 miles ago. I also removed the EGR valve and plugged and bolted both ends, so no leak there. PCV valve is new. Removed all but the absolutely necessary vacuum lines and capped the holes. Still noisy. temporarily pulled off the air regulator(not advised), and the AC idle up unit, still no relief. Im at my wits end so any help might keep me from going insane
