Speed?

Whats the top speed supposed to be on an 86 n/a 300zx? i got to about 115 a while ago and it topped out there but i think thats because i shifter at about 5000 RPMS rather than accelerating more before shifting. Today i was going 115 again, in 4th grear this time, just upshifted into 5th and started gaining a little more speed but then i had to slow down for a turn so i didnt get over 115 again. Could when you shift ( even by just 2000RPM) deligate your top speed (dont mind me, new to cars/racing). I was just kinda sad when i couldnt get it over 115.

no. your shift points do not deligate your top speed. the NAs are drag limited. The turbos are electronically speed limited.

I know I was behind my buddies '86 at 135 until he ran out of juice and I had to get in front of him...

Rod.

P.S. On a side note... Being "New to cars, Racing" etc. 115MPH in a Z is a dangerous place to go. Don't be a jackass and kill soembody or yourself with inexperience. These cars are fast and they are quite twitchy at high speeds. Get a little experience under your belt before you decide to test the limits of the car.

Rod's right. I've gotten mine to about 130, before I called it quits... it's just too dangerous on highways these days. Too many people who don't know how to react to someone going that speed... it jitters them, and they lose control. Especially here in MS, people really don't know how to drive out here. Sadly to admit, an old friend of mine, well I call him a friend...though he's no longer one, only 17, and he can out perform most of the police who've had the training for that type of driving. I won't be so cocky as to say I can do the same... but I've done things most people can't, though... it's still not wise. I'd take your car out somewhere safe, where you aren't endangering other motorists. I would deffinetely get to know your Z before you do things like that, though I also have an '86 N/T. I know it pretty well. But I don't trust it. I'm having to repair things at a weekly rate these days... In all, I suppose I'm just agreeing with Rod.

the only way to learn is to experiment and thats what i was doing. Im not stupid about when i drive fast, i live out in the middle of no where, i went down a road NO ONE was on and i can see a mile down the road at least, and when i see another car i slow down. i know its dangerous but you gotta learn somehow.

i've had my 87NA up to about 130 a few times. all of those times were in the middle of nowhere California when i was driving between seattle and san diego, always at night, and always when there were no other cars in sight. and all of those were for a very short ammount of time, just to see what it would do. the car was extemely twitchy at that speed, and so i let off quickly. i DO NOT condoe driving at wreckless speeds when there is traffic around. that is just stupid. but i cant rag on anyone who has done those things in the middle of nowhere, because i have done the same. prefferably, i would like to gain that kind of experience in a controlled track type setting, but that is not always possible. i suggest autocross as a good way to improve your driving skills in a safe setting. anyone can put the pedal to the floor till the car tops out, but handling it in tight corners must be learned and practiced, and shows a true mastery of the vehicle.

Your damn right about twitchiness at high speeds. At 11:30 p.m. about 3 1/2 months ago I was driving on this road that goes behind the Scottsbluff National Monument and I was going 120 (The road was empty) and I took my foot off the gas as I was reaching the top of the hill. On top of the hill there was an unmarked turn and I didn't see it till the last moment and I turned the wheel and my car started sliding sideways at 115mph. It scared the living hell outta me. So i prefer to do my hot rodding in daylight. Someday I wanna hit Infineon raceway or nurburging(I think that's spelled right).

you are aware that nurburgring is in germany, right? just a little ways away from nebraska. i bet there are tracks arund where you live that have open track days. you should check that out, it's a lot of fun, and not as dangerous.
