You can put a 280 tranny in. I don't know too much about cars. But when i baught my 240z, the previous owner put in a 280 5 speed. I don't know if it just fits right in or need some mods, but it can be done. I'll call the guy back and ask him about.

In the US, the 5-speed came out in 1977. So for the least amount of modifications, find a 5-speed that is in a 1977-78 280Z.
Or, if you find another year of Z (1970-76) in a junk yard or something that has a 5-speed in it, that one should be fine too. It was probably swapped previously. If you go that route, get the transmisison mounts and the driveshaft too. That is in case the previous mechanic had to have the driveshaft shortened because they put in a 280ZX transmission. (1979-83) Then it will be a basic bolt-in for you as long as you get all the parts.

in australia all our 260Z's where five speed..... i had a 280ZX 5 spd in my car that died and i put a 260Z one in place and i didnt need to modify anything appart from the speedo gear
