engine ID

im going to be purchising a motor block and heads. how do i tell if its turbo or NA. I have an 89 turbo.

The only difference is the pistons. The turbo pistons will have a slight dish shaped top to decrease compression. Otherwise, it's all the same.

i was thinking more a stamp on the block the heads are still on the engine.

Maybe something in the engine I.D. number, but, I can't help you there.

Another thing to look for is an oil return nipple on the oil pan. This would be where an oil return line, from the turbo, carried oil back to the pan.
