Is there a visual way to check to see if the timing belt needs to be changed? I'm replacing my alternator and wanted to check on the belt while I was down there. What should I be looking for?

The only thing I can think of is if it looks worn... It should be changed around every 60k miles. If it looks worn and ragged, more than likely it has been over 60K.

If it breaks, you might need a new engine (if you are lucky, you might escape with minimal damage). Check out z31.com and look at the modification/repair page. Lots of good info.
