Hey, if your headlight only works on high beam and never on low on the one side, your low beam filament is burnt out, and you'll have to replace the whole unit to get it to work, sorry, but if it's an intermittent problem, check your wiring harness...
The bulbs aren't too hard to replace (unless you have headlight covers), you just need a phillips head screwdriver and some patience =)

probably the headlight switch on the column, take off the steering wheel, remove the switch (tiny phillips - 2 screws, gold colored ones), pull the thin plastic cover off the backside and clean with some fine sandpaper (like 400 grit), plug it in and test it. also try electric parts cleaner - i think u can get it at radio shack. it's a spray stuff, i'd try that first and then resort to sandpaper cleaning. you can check for proper continuity if you have a mulitmeter and see exactly which ones are bad (or not).
