digital dash gas meter

So I filled my gas tank up the other day and the number gallons that the dash shows is not working. It was working right before I filled it. Here's a pic. not sure if fuse or fuel sender unit thing. Any suggestions?

You first have to do a "display check" to see if the display is actually malfunctioning.
Here's the procedure directly from the FSM:
1. While pushing trip reset switch A, switch ignition switch from "OFF" to "ON". Trip reset switch should remain pushed in until self-check operation starts.
2. Meter starts to automatically perform self-check. Segments for meters and gauges should illuminate one after another.
3. If any particular segment remains off, combination meter itself is faulty.

If the display check was good, you'll need a multimeter to check the circuits behind the cluster.
Your problem could be:
1. power unit
2. in the wire harness that controls the fuel injection pulse circuit
3. fuel tank gauge unit
4. in the wire harness that runs between the instrument cluster and the fuel tank gauge
5. the instrument cluster itself

Do the display check and see what happens.
If you don't have a FSM, go to Xenonz31. com and find one under the references tab.

The numbers only show up when you have 5 gallons or less.

I've filled it before a while back and I dont remember this happening last time. Anyways... did the test. Dash displays from E to 9 gallons. I assume it will start working again at 9 gallons. Or 5 like Hoov says.

5 is the magic number. mine is doing the same thing. Works sometimes but not reliably. Does not indicate unless you are at the 5 gallon mark or below.
