Digital Dash
Hi, my dash is out completely. I've been told the problem usually lies with the power supply box located under the dash above the drivers right knee. I've unscrewed the two harness screws and the box is hanging by the electrical wires. How do I disconnect the wires? There seems to be two wire harness connectors, do they simply unlatch somehow? If any one has any suggestions to anything pertaining to this problem give me a scream. Is it worth soldering the unit or should I look at getting a new one, I here they're quite expensive. Thx all any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Digital Dash
I never had a problem with my old digital dash but I had read a good write up on www.z31.com about the problems with faulty connections on it. I think you are having the same problem and might want to read through this repair guide: http://z31.com/dash.shtml

Re: Digital Dash
Thx for the reply spot. I've disconnected the box from the car and removed the backplate, actually the last screw stripped so I just bent the plate back. The green circuit board is now visible and there are four screws in the board. Do I have to remove those screws? I was starting to remove the first screw and it began to strip as well. Where exactly do I have to solder...lol. What functions does this box support? Is it just for the digital dash, radio, a/c and gauges? My car has every option available does that matter if I have to replace. I think I can get one at the scrapyard from a turbo as well but this car doesn't have the same options...,lumbar/bodysonic seats ect....Actually I guess I just have to match the part #'s.. lol. Thx again.

Hi Spot, thx for the all the help. When you talk about the pins are they the ones that connect to the wire harnesses and can I remove that black recessed slot they are sitting in or do I have to open the box? I think some pics may be a good idea lol, although I've never soldered. Where are u located I might need the part afterall, I'm just outside of Toronto Canada. Thx again bud much appreciated, maybe i'll be able to see how much gas is left and what speed i'm doing.

Re: Digital Dash
Hi again Spot. I think I know where you mean.I open the case to reveal the circuit board, trace where the pins attach from the otherside...,wow thats intricate work, I can see why you suggest the magnifying glass. Im supposed to solder those little "roads" that attach to each pin and make sure I don't "pave" any of the roads together....,I'd like to buy a vowel please...:Reminds me of an artist I seen in ottawa. The guy could carve 100 names on a grain of rice and create amazing artwork,of course you needed something similar to the hubble telescope to view it and I think all his tools were created by little fairies...lol. Sorry for the babble, thx again.

Re: Digital Dash
No, not the roads, but the little mound where the pin goes thru the board. I'll get a pic tonite, I'm running late for work and the camera is still packed from my trip..

Re: Digital Dash
while you're at it, run the magnifying glass over the other little mounds and fix them. Best is to find some old computer board or something to practice on first though. and be sure to clean before you solder. After you finish, wipe it down with alcohol to clean it again - the resin core will accelerate corrosion on it and that stuff seems to splatter a bit when you're soldering.

Re: Digital Dash
yep, i still have spares. don't know if my '87 spare is good though, dont have a "test subject" for it. I always snag them from the picnpull since people are always needing them and I know how to fix them.
good luck!

Re: Digital Dash
Ya know i was in tennessee when I was 21 and they had lines of old cars ...,57chevys 58..unreal. My brother and I have had a 1972 chevelle since 83 and I remember the quantity of parts and the ones i've turned down. Then came the chop shops.... which knew the upcoming value of musclecar parts, there are many here in canada that drive down everyday with "old orders" ship them back and the prices are unreal, sorry real.Bottom line demand is huge and now we know any old musclecar part is remanued japanese, but u gotta question to have a solid # matching car these days is so rare and thru my experiences of scrapyards, their turnover rate is so fast since they are becoming strip shops, and the actuality of finding any old car in any yard is quite remote. I live in a rural area and last year I was at one of the local yards that doesn't have a huge turnover...: A beautiful 240 came in, amazing shape, solid body and upon enquiry i found the frame was cracked. The owner of the yard ,an older scottish gent wouldn't let anything leave his yard but upon asking his son the value of that car ..,he replyed anything is for sale. The car had always been on my mind and now that I am part of a club and had been to my first swapmeet I figured hey, maybe I could let people know that theres this gem sitting here. (still don't understand why the owner scraped it the car looked mint) Went back yesterday to look for this power supply module as I knew there was also a z31 in the yard and they were just crushed.Im still just crushed.I went to 4 yards yesterday...,at hwy 9 autowreckers.., same thing crushed 2 last month .(84 300zx)It's getting that unless u are in some remote bum [censored] Idaho spot..(Hey is that a phrase in the states?LOL) everyting is becoming over the counter regular store sales. Most of the yards around me don't allow u in anymore and I understand the Insurance Liability deal but how I miss the "stroll" in the local scrapyard and I find it akin to fishing...,if I don't catch that trophy, the visual reminisying of all the older cars keeps me peaceful. How Ironic... Freebird just came on the radio lol. So if i've gottin off topic.., I love zed's...... and pretty much any thing else that looks appealing, tastes or sounds good and generally makes ya feel happy. Oh I meant to say one thing.., I asked for a part at a local yard for my grand prix and they quoted me 25 dollars more than brand new at my local dealer. in relation....., back in 1992 I got an estimate from sears for my 84 300zx ( original 16" pirellis/4tires and the salesman quoted me at 2000$. I ****in laughed so hard at this guy and he still tried to work the deal.Anyway Spot I talked to an electrician that i work with and he told me to bring it in. He said if he doesn"t have the smaller tools to do the job ,he's pretty sure his new apprentice will. I must say however that this is my second post( first was anybody no where I can find 50th anny stripes.. and thx zmaniac) but what a fantastic forum and I still come across alot of parts especially 1 hour north of me I know theres atleast 3 300zx'right now..., might be goin there tomorrow. Spot u the man.. if i can help u or anyone i'm here. Thx again and oh yeah.., the wife and I just got in from the local, like to play that ntn trivia game (played across north america) so ive had a few...no [censored] eh? All the best.
