Temp guage out
I purchased an 89 300 zx not too long ago and I have just realized that my temp guage and my tripmeter is out. I do remember seeing it on a few days ago and then I turn off the car and turn it back on and it is gone again. I was reading about the power supply stuff but if it was that then I would assume everything would be dead not just the one thing. Well anyway does anyone know of any connectors or wires that may have come loose for this to not be operating anymore or (gulp) the possibility of that part of the dash being burnt out. I tried looking under there to see what I could see but I really dont know which wire or whatever I am looking for and so I have no clue where to look. Anyway any help would be so much appreciated. Thanx a lot.

Re: Temp guage out
The power supply can cause portions of the dash to go out. When the one in my '86 started going, the first thing to begin flickering and then go out was the tripmeter section. I think it just depends on which solder connections crack first.
See barkly's posts regarding "Digital Dash" for info on repairing it. Yours will be a bit different, but the connections are in the same location (just not as many of them).

My dad and i had pretty much the same problem but with the fuel gauge on our 50th AE. We repared the power supply thinking that it was the problem, it did make a differance and other areas of the dash started to show up brighter than before, but the fuel gauge stayed the same. Try resoldering the power supply and if that dosent work then im afraid that you'll have to pull the insturment panal out.

Re: Temp guage out
on the fuel gauge, you might want to try cleaning the sending unit. just pull up the rear carpet and the unit is under that little access panel. I still haven't done mine, but it is a comon z31 problem.
...and from the ashes shall rise a new hope. And it shall be known as "Z". And it will be good.

We cleaned the sending at the first sign of trouble but it didnt work. So we rebulit the power suply, it still didnt work. Finally after much swearing, 4 long hours, and 3 sandwiches, we replaced the insturment panal and viola! we had a fuel gauge. We also rebuilt the old unit but we were to tried to find out if it worked or not. I'll find out if it dose work when i get a 84-86 300 turbo.

Re: Temp guage out
I have since now taken out the power supply unit which in turn has made my hands look like some kind of swiss cheese from scrapes and scratches from the metal. But I saw nothing wrong with the power supply but realized if I wiggled the wires on the connector plug then it worked. It seems to me the connector plug is faulty but seeing how short those wires are under there makes me leary because terminating a new wire would be a real (well you know). Thanx for all the help everyone and hey if you guys have any advice what to do bout the plug let me know as of right now it works for bout a second when I give the underside of the dash a nice hard smack. Then it works for bout 2 secs and then it dims back into darkness. For now this works but I would like to get this fixed permanantly. Thanx guys.

Re: Temp guage out
I had my dash go out and it was exactly like you describe, wiggle the plug and it would work. I did have the power supply resoldered, but that didn't fix the problem, then I had plastic spacers placed in between the plug and the supply, and it worked just fine...

Re: Temp guage out
Sorry AZ, I'm still not quite sure where exactly that sending unit is, can u be more specific? By the way, under the rear carpet there is also a cable which runs from the front to the rear through a floorplate harness, is that the speedometer cable? I've read that the speedo cable is connected to the pulse generator which in turn runs the dash....?????

The fuel sending unit is in the middle of the rear of the car. Unplug the 2 connectors under the carpet back there - there should be a blue one and a white one that both go down thru the access cover. Lift the rear hatch mat and foam stuff, and take off the litle cover with two screws in it (this is the same one with the wires going thru it). Then unbolt the six bolts that hold the other top on then you'll see a whitish plastic thing. Use a pair of pliers to grip the thing and pull straight up. I used two pairs of pliers on mine to pull up on it and it came right out.
here's a snip from some archived info that I found...
1) No smoking! Do this in an open area.
2) Open fuel filler cap to vent gas fumes
3) Do try cleaning the unit first. Extremely easy.
First take a cotton ball and some rubbing alcohol.
Next use a pink rubber eraser on the dry plate. Be
very easy with the eraser. This should give you a very
clean contact for the float.
4) Use a pair of pliers to pull the unit out of the tank,
and replace the check door while your cleaning your
sensor(to keep any junk from falling in).
Unless your float is taking in gas your old sensor should
still work with just a little maintenance.
