Altenator install probs

Altenator install probs
Had to replace altenator in my 300zxt. Simple enough, right? Well, aparently I didn't connect the wires correctly and didn't get any dash lights or aux. electric items to work, but I did have headlights. Attached are two pictures. The first one is the way I wired it up and the second is the way I think it needs to be wired. Please let me know if either of these is right. Also, what is the pourpose of the capaciter that is attached to the white wire? Can I get a new one at a parts shop, or do I need to go to a junkyard and pull the wiring harness out of another Z? ...and yes, I do know where the plastic piece snaps in, but it's still attached to the car.
Thanks for the help!!!

Re: 2nd pic of wiring
Yes I think the pics are the same. In either case the white wire should attach to the terminal with the nut on it - the one that has the plastic insolator around it. I would recommend that you use a flat eye type wire connector on the end on those wires. Mine doesn't have the capacitor but I do know they are very +/- sensitive. They blow up easily if polarity is reversed. What exactly is not working? Sounds like you need to check fuses/fusible links. There is a fusible link between the alt and battery.

Re: ok...here it is
Did you by chance forget to hook up one of the wires? There should be (at least on my 84) three different connectors in the harness to hook to the alt. The plastic connector you mentioned. The black wire under the capacitor bracket you have in the photo. And an additional white wire that goes on the insolated terminal - in addition to the one you have in the photo.

Sorry didn't even look at the new pic. The new pic is wrong. Looking at the first pics I thought the white wire and the capacitor wire were joined together. But after looking again I see they just end in the same place in the photo. Take the capacitor wire and extend it and connect to insolated terminal. The first photo is correct.

Re: ok...here it is
you can leave the capacitor out. It is for noise reduction, but most of the rebuilds are coming back with better than stock specs on noise.

Thanks for the help!!
After pulling out the altenator again and re-installing it the correct way, I did have a fuseable link that was fried. My wife and I went down to the "Pick-n-Pull" and had a blast looking for parts. I pulled an entire link box, as well as a bunch of other stuff off of some '85zxt's. Not only is our baby running, it's working better than ever!! If any of you live in the Dallas area, give me a shout so I can tell you how to get to this place. They just got in an '82ZXT that looks like it runs and they are parting it out. It even has all 4 "swastika" wheels! Thanks for the help!!!!

Hey! Hit me up, because I'm a bit over an hour from DFW and need to come out there to find a tranny. marcust@mlpro.com
