Welcome to ZDriver! Check over the car, look for probs, do a tune up, check the timing... all the basics. Oh, and buy a Haynes manual.

Alight, quick lesson:

Z31 = 84-89 300zx
Z32 = 90-96 300zx

Z31 had turbo & non turbo options: Non turbo (VG30E) and turbo (VG30ET)
Z32 had turbo & non turbo options: Non turbo (VG30DE) and turbo (VG30DETT).

Feel free to use Google to find tons of info on 300zx's. Some good Z31 sites: www.az-zbum.com & www.redz31.com

Moved to Z31 Forum.

no need for twin turbos on the z31, not practical. if you want turbo, i HIGHLY suggest you buy a factory turbo z31. there are no turbo kits for these cars like you would find for a honduh.

find a turbo 300zx and buy it. you cant just "bolt on" a turbo to a non-turbo 300zx. it IS possible to convert a non turbo to turbo, but it is expensive and time consuming. the compression on the non turbo is quite a bit higher than the turbo, and if you put a turbo on the NA motor you would not be able to run much boost without destroying the engine. trust me, your money will be much better spent buying a factory turbocharged car and modifying that.

this has been asked more than any other question on the forum. please search, there is lots of info on this subject.

you will find that popular opinion states the MOST cost effective way of doing this is to just get a turbo car in the beginning.

or go get u a z31 and throw a rb in it. the turbo manifold for a z31 is very simple. the dp is another story >_<. u could make a n/a to turbo without a turbo motor. u can find u some turbo pistons or tune the hell out of it to no ping with high compression. seems like your trying to build a budget car. trying to keep up with rich kids. why worry about what others have? just drive the car for fun. if u get a kick out of racing a rich kid car then by all means do it. their are some serious fast z31 and z32. but just like every other car be prepared to lay down some money.

you dont even need turbo low compression pistons, the stock z31 NA is only 9:1 all you need is a turbo exhaust manifold, turbo, turbo timer, boost controller, down pipe, computer, boost gauge, 9:1 is fine for a turbo setup, but anything higher then that will kill turbo efficiency.

you don't need a turbo timer.

i still say that the best route to go is to get a factory turbo car. there are plenty in california. it will save you lots of time, money, headaches, and frustration.
