Need New Springs

Hey Guys,
I've been researching, and reading, and doing everything I'm supposed to be doing, but I'm a little confused. I need new shocks/struts and springs for my 89T. Yes, the electronic ones are dead. I've decided on Tokico Illumina's (just bought them today), and I would really like Eibach Pro-Kit Springs, but on all the websites it says "exc. Turbo". Are the NA and Turbo springs really that different? Could I still buy the Eibachs?

I like the progressive rate springs because I use my car as a daily driver, but once I get some more money I'd like to do a few track days.

That doesnt really help me...I just want to know if anyone knows if they will work with the turbo model. what else will work?

I don't want a harsh ride since I'm using this car as my daily driver. I want the comfort of a daily driver but still have the cornering of a track car...I dont know what else to go for other than progressive rate springs.

Any ideas?

coilovers, its the only way your going to be getting a smooth ride for the street and still be able to go the track..

people without a clue should stay out of the Z31 forums. No one makes coilovers for the Z31, so it's stupid to advize people to get something that doesn't exist.

Also, Eibachs are great for people who like a little better performance on the road but don't want to shake out their fillings all the time. "Soft, progressive" springs are great for the typical street driver. What's funny about them is they're actually stiffer than the stock springs at their softest.

Thanks zbum, but what I really want to know is,

Does anyone know if the Eibach will fit 89 Turbo even though it says "exc. Turbo" on a bunch of websites?

I don't understand how some brands say they're for both turbo and n/a but other brands say they're only for one or the other. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Yes I have. And you'll also note that it takes a good amount of know how to perform that modification. Those are not a simple bolt on job.

Also, he's asking about springs for a STREET DRIVEN CAR and a DAILY DRIVER. Coilover spring rates are typically much higher than most aftermarket drip in springs. They are not a great ride for the average street driver.

i have driven a adjustable coilover setup on the street and as long as you soften up the shocks a little it should be fine for street as long as the streets he drives on arent falling apart...

The best (arguably) shocks for the Z31 are the 5 way adjustably Tokico Illuminas. These can be had for $400. The Tokico Blues are easy enough to find for $250.

If you spend more than $250 on springs, you're getting custom wound springs. I typically see the Eibachs go for around $200. Some of the stiffest springs that are mass produced are the ST springs and can be found for about $150.

So a full Illumina and ST setup would end up costing less than $600 in total and be one of the best handling systems available for the money.

Coilovers usually go for somewhere in the range of $800 to $1200. Jason got his on a group buy for $650. But these will not bolt right in and take some modifications and fabrication to make work properly. These are not a drop in system.

Hell, if you want to talk about modifying the suspension to make a nice handling car, you can swap just about anything into the car you want. A popular modification these days is to swap in the S13/S14/Z32 rear subframe. It's also been proven the S13 front spindles can be used with the S13 coilovers. But why stop there? I'm sure with enough skill, a formula one suspension can be made to work.
