hood scoop or vent?
Please, stay out of the Z31 sections. It's quite apparent you don't know what you're talking about.
i dont really think thata appropriate az-zbum its a simple aerodynamic question, and i feel everyone has there own view on it all i was asking was which way would the hood scoop help lower the overall temps.Im not to concerned about cooling the turbo specifically cause its water cooled already i just want that extra ten or so degree drop in engine bay temps, but im going to go out and buy that gun that tells surface temps and drive for an hour with the scoop facing both ways and then ill know. i didn't mean for this thread to end up with people getting all agro with each other.
and hey skib could you post a picture of your dato with the z31 hood scoop please i've been dying to see it.

For example, what is circled in image number 1 clearly shows what makes the 280zx hood vent, a vent, not a NACA duct. NACA ducts work by inducing counter rotating vortices from the low ramp angle combined with the sudden widening of the walls, the vortices deflect the boundary layer which is what gives its low effect on drag. Now whats going to happen to that boundary layer when it hits that second vent behind the "NACA duct"?
So the duct pulls the air in, and the vents behind it allow air to escape. Meaning the duct is working as a duct.
But it doesn't matter since the Z31 air scoop is completely different than the 280ZXT duct/vent combination.

Anyone hear o the 200zr??
Front facing scoop to bring air to a top mount intercooler.
If you face it backwards, in theory, the hot air will be able to escape from around the turbo and exhaust. Cooler turbo = more power
Your car, do what you want.

Do you have any concept of some of the principles applied to cars? First off if you want a cooler turbo water cool it. secondly you don't want a cold turbo, but at the same time you don't want to overheat it either. If I remember right, a good temp of the exhaust housing should be about 1300 degree's. and lastly even a 100mph wind on the turbo isn't going to have much of an effect on a turbo that is under load.
Oh great. This thread again? Just what we needed.
Anyway... The temps you want that high are EXHAUST TEMPS (before the turbo), you don't want the turbo to be anywhere near those temps. That would be stupid. You want the temps AFTER the turbo to be much, much cooler. This means that more energy was transferred from the exhaust side to the intake side. So yes. You want the turbo itself to be cool.
And hell yes a 100mph 100 degree wind is going to have a huge effect on a turbo that's being fed with 1300 degree exhaust temps. Why wouldn't it? You think it's going to have less effect than 100mph 100 degree wind will on a radiator or intercooler that's at only 300 degrees?
Seriously. I wonder where some of the common sense went for a couple posters in this thread.
