ZX Driveshaft

Hi everyone, I recently discovered I have a busted u-joint on my driveshaft. My car is an 82 280zx N/A engine. I lowered the driveshaft on Saturday and that is when I discovered the busted u-joint. I read about getting them pressed out to remove the old ones.

My question is with buying the new u-joints. Are there any modifications I need to make to install the new u-joints? I will be replacing them with ones from Black Dragon Auto.

I have two used driveshafts from 280zx N/A Coupes and one 2+2 driveshaft if you are looking to buy a good used one.

Well hammering them off has failed so far. I can't get the caps off once it clears the yoke. I may end up taking it to a shop if I can't do it myself.

A little trick if you can't get the caps all the way, get both caps sticking out of the ears of the yoke and move the u joint to one side. Try tapping the opposite side with a hammer lightly in hopes of knocking some needles over and flip it and try getting the caps out again. I build drivelines for a living and do it all of the time. Hope it works for you!

Thanks everyone for your help. If you are wondering, like I was, the part number for new u-joints is 430-10 from Rockford Driveline. I found the parts here and ordered them after verifying the measurements with a caliper. All the caps fit nice and snug. The assembly process went pretty smooth, the only pain was installing the snap rings. If anyone has any questions regarding removal or installation of the u-joints please pm me and I would be happy to help. Sorry I didn't take any pictures, I was anxious to get everything put back together.

I have a 1983 280ZX and I’m beginning to hear clunks coming from the car when I pull away from a stop. All I’ve read says U joints. I also feel some vibration in the stick when I drive as well. The car has 254,000 miles and has never had the U joints replaced. Looks like I will have to. My question: The drive train aft of the diff seems straightforward but the Haines manual says the driveshaft U joints are not replaceable. It seems that maybe they aren’t SERVICEABLE, ie greaseable etc but ARE REPLACEABLE. Is this true and what model/part number would you use? Any help is appreciated.
