What kind of gas do you guys run?
I personally only run 87 BP Amoco gas. With these lower compression engines (8.8:1) and aluminum heads, I wouldn't think there would be any problem with baseline low octane fuel. Am I right? Would it really make a difference whether there was 87 in it or 92?
Thanks for your help,

I always run 93. I personally think it burns cleaner. Cause when I bought the car it only 87. The carbon build up was crazy, even after a tune up it clean up a little bit but not a lot. So I changed to 93 and after about 3 tanks it was noticably cleaner. I also saw about a 3mpg increase between the 87 and 93. But that is just my opinion.

Since I probably drive more than any other person on this site. here is my 2 cents. I have ran 85, 87,88,89,91,92,93,and 102. The only one that made a difference was the 102. Otherwise I have not got better bas mileage or performace from any other grade. I do however agree that the higher octane every 5 tanks heps clean up the works. I just pulled my plugs after 10k ( 2 months), and they were perfect. I get gas in the states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, and from all venders.
So run what you can afford, I do recommend the higher octane every 5 tanks though......

I have to run 87 octain just to keep my car from pinging due to carbon buildup from running high octain fuel in the past! I really don't believe that a tank of higher octain gas cleans anyting inside your engine. These car do have low compression and I used to be able to run 85.

Bleach, you might want to try running a decarbonizer in the engine, or pull the plugs, spray each cylinder with carb cleaner, change the oil (it does thin it out), and take it out and really lean on it. That's what we call in the industry blowing the cobwebs out of it. Get on that thing like a hot rod and it'll break all the carbon loose and shoot it right out the tailpipe. Try it and it will help your engine.
Ok, cool. I'll try that. I usually drive the car pretty easy but "clean her out" at least once per drive while entering the freeway.
...or at random when I feel like it. The Z is parked for now. The transmission died... plus I need a new timing chain I think. 218K miles on one chain?

Yeah, that's a common trick known to those only in the industry. Put something in it to clean the carbon, take it on the road, and beat the sh** out of it. Take it on a country road and really get on it for a good 10 or so minutes to get the engine nice and hot and blow all the crap out the tailpipe.
P.S. that's great mileage on a timing chain, others would wish to be as ucky as you.

I drive mne hard evrytime i take it on a drive. bt my drives are over 1000 miles and have lots of curvey roads.
P.S. My timing chain has 382k on it so far. I must have had a midweek motor put in my car. It just seems to run forever. All I do is drive it, kep her tuned eery 10k or less and change the oil evry 3k or less.

That's like mine. I've got 250k+ miles and an old nissan Z tech told my my chain was in good shape, so I figure someone got to it sometime or another. Sure would be nice if the previous owner(s) kept records like I do!...
